Re: The official Thief videogame thread

This looks interesting, but at the same time stealth is implemented terribly in most games. I'm waiting for reviews, but it's definitely on my radar.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

The Thief series has always been my favorite game series. Its where my username comes from.

However, I am disappointed with a lot of what I am hearing about this game.

The poster above mentions that all the slang from the original games is removed. So basically that means all the "taffer" dialogue is gone. Its not a Thief game without that stuff in my opinion. Its like Star Wars without a lightsaber.

The poster also mentions its more linear than the previous games. More linear than Thief 3? That was already very streamlined compared to 1 and 2.

The poster also sounds like it favors combat over being an actual stealthy thief. All the talk about the flashy instant takedowns and such, and heck it even says you get experience for headshots but no experience for being stealthy.

No Pagans, Hammerites, or undead? WTF? That is again like Star Wars without lightsabers, Jedi, and the Force.

Also it says there are quicktime events. I hate QTEs. It says its not stuck in the 90s, but QTes are a relic of the 90s that really needs to go away.

This game sounds like its Thief in name only. It doesn't sound anything at all like what made Thief 1-3 so great.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

Looking at those spec requirements, this is an insanely scalable game, seems to be a trend lately, Battlefield 4 is also crazy scalable.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

They have been working in the game for a long time. It was supposed to be a Xbox 360/PS3 game, when those were the only consoles. In another link I read that they removed QTEs from the game. So the poster may not be that accurate.

Hopefully the game looks as good as Tomb Raider.

Nice deal on Amazon for the older titles on PC ($7.49 and eligible for the $5 editors choice coupon if you bought any PC downloads in December):

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

I only played the first one on PC. I get bored of stealth games because I get impatient. Happened a lot to me just playing Dishonored Still, i'm mildly curious about this so if the reviews are good i'll pick it up.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

The first two were amazing. Especially the second. The level where you have to cross the city by rooftop, then break into a mansion is one of my all time favorite levels in any game. I should find my copy and give it a go again -- it's been years since I played it.

Three was OK. I had fun when I played it, but it didn't stay with me like the first two.

I'll reserve judgment on this one, but my gut reaction is similar to taffer's.

The third game was definitely the weakest, but it did have the best level in the series in my opinion. The Shalebridge Cradle...

I get shivers just thinking about that place. The only game I have ever played that came anywhere close to being that intensely sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat-scary and atmospheric was the original Condemned game on Xbox 360.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

Dude, System Shock II?

Dead Space?

Hell, even Bioshock was tense.

Anyway, totally excited for Thief. One of my all-time favorite series.

Re: The official Thief videogame thread

I have never actually played System Shock 2 believe it or not. I know it was made by the same people that did the Thief games, but I just never got to it for whatever reason.

I never played Dead Space either.

I did play the first Bioshock game, and I agree its very atmospheric, but I never felt the same level of tension that anything could jump out at anytime like in Condemned or the Shalebridge Cradle mission on Thief 3.

I've seen articles saying they removed the xp system entirely. I don't know about the instant takedowns, but I've seen comments that you are very weak in direct combat.

I've also read that, on PS4, it uses the controller light bar. When you are concealed in darkness, the light glows normally. When you are exposed to the light, the bar glows a bright white.

If anyone's interested in an early look at this game, it has obviously leaked as there are 4 live streams running on Twitch tonight.

Want a free copy of the original Thief (Thief Gold, actually)? Of course you do.

6.8 from IGN. Sounds like a dud.
