Resurrection? Based on this show's past ridiculous twists, my guess is that we'll only hear his voice trough phone calls and it'll turn out Carroll had his voice put through that speech generator Roger Ebert had done tricking us into thinking he's still alive.

The prospect of the new season looks somewhat promising and the preview looks halfway decent (hopefully it's not due to a stellar marketing team). Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, ...

Going to actually put my money where my mouth is and sit this one out. First season was just too much for me.

I've only seen the first few episodes or the first season before I checked out due to the show going full-retard, but I couldn't last long with this episode since it was so obviously still in full-retard mode.

So there was ten minutes of the show before the subway attack? Did they explain how Ryan survived the stabbing (if I remember the season finale correctly)?

How weird. I just checked my DVR. I got the entire broadcast. The post game show finished at 7:18pm PT. I'm guessing East coast Fox affiliates cut out of the post game show early.
Anyways, This is what you missed.
Quick recap of the season 1 finale.
Episode picks up in Ryan's apartment (the same final scene from the finale) Ryan gets the takeout food from the door, turns around and then psycho neighbor stabs him. Ryan's collapses. Claire comes out of the shower and sees him bleeding and freaks out, psycho neighbor stabs her in the back. Ryan screams No!
(That's where the season 1 finale ended)
The scene continues, psycho neighbor turns Claire around as she's on the floor and stabs her in the chest a few times. Ryan then grabs her, they get into a scuffle for a few seconds, he then grabs her by the neck and snaps it. He then goes to Claire, who is gasping for air and choking on her own blood.
Ambulance takes Ryan and Claire to the hospital, he's on a stretcher and sees her being treated. A few hours past and Ryan's in the hospital bed. Mike walks in and Ryan asks how Claire is going. Mike shakes his head. The assumption is that Claire died from her injuries. Ryan starts crying and they fade to black.
Things pick up 1 year later. Ryan wakes up and he goes to his job at NYU. He's now a teacher. Later we see Ryan in an AA meeting. Keith Carradine is his sponsor. Ryan casually mentions that he's now 5 months sober. Later on, they go to Ryan's apartment and his niece visits for dinner and we meet her boyfriend as well. She's an NYPD detective and is played by Jessica Stroup from 90210. Carradine and a woman from the AA meeting played by Tehmina Sunny also come to Ryan's apartment for dinner.
That's the 10 minutes you all missed. I'm going to finish the rest of the episode and post my thoughts later.

Kind of a low key premiere episode, but I thought it had some entertaining elements to it.
I liked the pickup scene from the finale and was surprised they killed off Claire. Man, Ryan's had a tough life. At least they didn't go the predictable route and have her survive the attack.
Liked the subway attack by the Carroll followers. That was pretty freaky. Had a very horror movie element.
at Sam Underwood aka Zach Hamilton from Dexter being one of Carroll's followers.
at Ryan being such a douche to Mike and acting like he doesn't give a shit about Joe, yet it's doing his own rogue investigation.
Not a huge fan of Connie Nielsen. Definitely not as hot as Natalie Zea. But she seems like an adequate replacement as the female lead.

This premiere seemed almost lighthearted compared to the episodes of last season. But there was enough going on to hold my interest. I loved the evil twins very much, and they will no doubt be the highlight of this season for me.

Last night's premiere wasn't bad.
I liked the pickup scene from the finale and thought the subway scene was effectively creepy. The biggest surprise for me was that there weren't stupid decisions being made before every commercial break (though I realize it's still quite early). Only thing I suppose was Hardy interrogating the Carroll suspect so close while in his apartment -- doesn't he know to not be w/in arm's reach of these people by now?
Got a kick out of Emma's new identity. Also, you just knew Ryan had a command room of his own -- with keypad entry no less.

Yep - FOX screwed DVR-setters everywhere. I stayed up to make sure this recorded right for my wife, and now have to explain to her than she needs to watch the "NFC Championship Postgame" listing first, then "The Following" one.
So-so episode. Looks like they're making the mistakes they made last year all over again.

Re: The Following -- Season Premiere -- "Resurrection" -- 1/19/14
I for one am thrilled that they have decided to stay in full retard mode. My two favorite moments are Ryan carrying the uncocked 1911 into the suspects apartment - might as well have been carrying a brick. Even better was not immobilizing the guy after he knocked him out. Who wants to bet that sometime this season we'll find out that Ryan is in full Dexter mode, going after the following on his own? What the hell other reason would he have for not revealing that Carroll is still alive?
This and H5O are two of the funniest shows around - if you enjoy full retard police action shows.
