Appalachian Outlaws (History channel) --- this is not what I expected

Judging by the previews, I thought this show was a Moonshiners knockoff. Instead, it's about people in the mountains who illegally harvest ginseng. It's heavily regulated and a lot of land is off limits, so there's the risk of arrest or being shot. I'm not kidding. I'm sure they are embellishing the hell out of it but damn, who knew ginseng was such a big issue. What I don't get is why they don't just farm it.

From what I know of ginseng, the American variety is the mildest. Korean and Chinese are more powerful. But American ginseng has its uses too.

Gotta say, that's quite a twist on the usual "reality" fare.
