I don't know how good it is but 1st of all Sony is kind of late. Toshiba and Pioneer came out with progressive scan DVD player long time ago. Also, you can get toshiba 6200 for about $570, Pioneer Elite DV-37 for about $680, so why would you want to pay over $1000 for Sony? Just for the name? Not even mentioning that Sony doesn't play CDR and CDRW. I am planning to buy one soon too but I will go with 6200 or DV-37.

The name? What are you nuts? Sony's dvdplayers are better than Toshiba's.
Sony produces a more film like image..and they play ALL dvds.
Toshiba doesn't.

First of all I am getting sick of people here bashing various brands of components, various DVD's etc. There is no reason for it. There ARE pro's and cons to everything.
Secondly, the ability to play CD-R's and CD-RW's is not the be all and end all of DVD players.
So, everyone stop all this component, DVD and whatever else bashing. Thank you.

Didn't you post this in the Buying new DVD player on $400 Budget Help Thread? What's the difference here?

The Apex is OK as a secondary player. I would not buy it as a primary player. IMHO the two best brands to look at are Sony and Pioneer. They have several models under $400. Toshiba make decent players but they have had several problems WRT certain DVD's. Checkout the Sony DVP-S360, Pioneer DV-333 and DV-434. My advice, stay away from all other brands especially RCA, GE, Phillips, JVC, Panasonic etc.

Yes but I was not bashing those other brands. I did not say so and so is crap. I was just giving a comparision and an informed opinion. In that thread the originator of the thread was actually asking for suggestions on what to buy. In this thread Sonic was pointing out this new Sony player and everyone just started bashing. There is a difference.

Here are the specs for this beast (UK multiregion version):
http://www.techtronics.com/ttn/shop/50-sony-9000.html
I'm not real happy about only SCART component; I thought it was supposed to be worse than the tri-RCA normal connexions (anyone???).
I still want one YESTERDAY.

What cracks me up is that some people immediately think about the price... Like if they pay $650 for the Toshiba progressive...there is no need for them to even think about the Sony Progressive because they figure that it's inside components is the same chit as Toshiba's. LOL!!!!!

In recent years the entry level Sony players do not have dual-discrete lasers and [thus?] are incapable of playing CD-R's. My DVP-S500d from 1998 plays CD-R's just fine. Even today the higher-end Sony players are still capable of playing CD-R's. If this player is $1500 you can bet it will have dual-discrete lasers.
