Re: Last movie that surprised you?
I assume you mean pleasant surprise. In that case...
Star Trek Into Darkness. I heard so many fans of the 2009 Star Trek saying that they considered the sequel a disappointment, but I found it to be a pretty huge improvement. Better villain, better story, better pacing, better action, and Chris Pine stopped acting like a fratboy and started acting like Captain Kirk. Loved it.

The Lone Ranger. Was expecting the second coming of the Plague, and instead found an enjoyable (if overlong and overindulgent) action-adventure-western. I really feel this movie will definitely find an audience starting with its second life.

The Lone Ranger is overdone but yeah, it will find an audience. A lot of work definitely went into it, and I think it was just sort of a fun movie for everybody to rag on.

The Wolverine. I wasn't sure I would like the Japanese setting or a Wolverine character study of sorts but I really ended up enjoying it. Plus it was an absolutely beautifully shot film.
They could have elaborated a tad bit more on Wolverine's motivations for choosing
. But aside from that minor compliant I thought it was great.

Gravity -
I was a fan of COM but am not a huge fan of the 2 leads and don't care for 3D
The movie had so much high praise and hype I figured I would be disappoined
While the story itself wasn't groundbreaking it did live up to the hype of being a cinematic "event", one I'm glad to have experienced

Knew very little about it when I rented it. Turned out to be one of the best movies of the year. Charming and very satisfying.

Man of Steel. Expected to be lame. Always thought Supes was kinda corny away. I've always kinda rolled my eyes at the now cliché use of older big names for superhero's parents. Except Glenn Ford, he was great.
Loved every minute of it. The use of short flashbacks saved me from sitting through a long Clark Kent childhood waiting for the action to start. Krypton was cool as hell, except the growing babies thing. The effects were top notch. Best fantasy superhero move to date.

Fright Night 2: New Blood (2013)
The sequel to a shitty remake, shot in Romania, that basically ignores the remake and essentially is just another remake in its own right.
And, yet, it was really fucking good. It's the same characters from the first film, but they've added elements of the original Fright Night 2, like how the antagonist vampire is a female, named Gerri Dandridge. Peter Vincent is a burned out reality TV show host. Charley is an inquisitive kid who takes matters into his own hands early on. Amy is a hot piece with a genuine relationship with Charley. The only weak link in the cast is Evil Ed, who's more of a douchebag than anything else. There are some good twists in here, and the climax really caught me off guard during a few moments. Totally expected it to suck, ended up really digging it.

21 Jump Street- Wasn't expecting much of anything, didn't know anything about the TV show, the trailer made it look like another vulgar R-rated comedy. Surprisingly, it was hilariously funny and had genuine satirical bite about nostalgia and the endless 80s revival. Hill and Tatum were a great match, and Ice Cube stole every scene he was in. "There's rumors. In the Twittersphere!" The action and comedy still don't entirely sit well together-that's a difficult tight rope to pull off-but on the whole, surprisingly good.

We're the Millers - Thought it was hilarious. Didn't really go in with any high expectations.
The Tower - Surprisingly well made Korean disaster movie about a high rise in Seoul that gets engulfed in flames. Basically a remake of the Towering Inferno, but really well done with memorable characters. I believe it was just added to Netflix. You all should check it out.
Escape Plan -- Even though it was regarded as a financial bomb at the box office, I was surprised how good it was. Fast paced action and Stallone and Arnold had good chemistry.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
I did not see it back in 2012 and i waited all year for the extended edition to come out. In that year i heard a lot of negative things about the movie being over long, boring and self indulgent. I watched the movie when the extended cut came out and loved it from beginning to end. It felt like it went by at a good pace and it made me get excited enough to want to see the next one at the cinema next week.

I didn't love Dredd.
