Which of these, if any, are worth blind buys? I have not seen any of them before.

Keep in mind that these sets are apparently DVD-Rs (manufactured on demand when ordered) and ...

This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

This product is expected to play back in DVD Video "play only" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives.

There are some good "B" movies in these sets (most of them show up on TCM on a regular basis) but they would have to be priced at $10 or less for me to offset the potential hassle factor with trying to play them.

I'm waiting for WAC to do a decent sale on Forbidden Hollywood 6 & 7 before they run out of factory pressed copies.

Good luck with that, the odds aren't in your favor.

The GEORGE SANDERS "SAINT" movies are very entertaining and probably the best of this lot, though I don't believe any of them include any trailers, which is a minus. Also, the NICK CARTER triple feature is great and well worth the discounted price, including a trailer for each movie.

The rest are all enjoyable, with varying degrees of success, especially PERRY MASON and PHILO VANCE, where the quality of the writing and directing is mixed. I personally like THE FALCON movies and one of them is based on Raymond Chandler's FAREWELL, MY LOVELY, but I think the price for them here is still too high. The FAST COMPANY and WHISTLING triples aren't all that great unless you are interested in a THIN MAN ripoff or for the latter, have an appreciation of Red Skelton's dubious talents.

Great prices, but I would rather buy my mods directly from WB in case any do go bad. I've had one out of about a hundred and it was an easy replacement with them. I don't mind waiting for sales from them and paying more for that kind of service and not worrying about a time limit.

I just ordered the Saint and Falcon collections from Oldies for a bit more than these prices. They still haven't arrived either.

Thanks for posting this deal. I love the old Red Skeltons. I sold my vhs whistling series several years ago and hadn't replaced it yet. I ordered them today.

I'm tempted because I've wanted to see the 1930s Perry Mason films for a long time, but every clip available on YouTube makes them look like terrible Thin Man rip-offs. I think my money would be better spent on more sets of the Raymond Burr TV series.

Interesting to see others views on these films(at least there are people out there that like them, and still watch them!) I never thought much one way or the other on the Red Skelton Whistling in...films til I caught them back to back to back a few years ago. Really tickled my funnybone that day. Reminded me of Bob Hope Paramount films from the 40s.
Grew up watching the Falcons on tv in the 70's. Never got to see all of them til much later. Interesting to see George Sanders basically doing the Saint character(with a few changes) then having his real life bother take over the series, that surely is a first...and Tom Conway is quite, good, IMO. Some of the later Falcons, such as the Falcon in San Francisco, has a bit of the film noir in it.
7 films on v 1 for $19.99 and 6 on V2 for $17.99, seems pretty good. $3 or less per film.
Tempted by the Philo Vance set. Different actors playing him just about every film, but they are pretty good mysteries, they take themselves a bit more seriously than the Perry Mason films....

Re: Amazon DOTW 9/8/13 - 9/14/13: Warner Archive Mystery Collections $9.99 to $19.99

^ The only Philo Vance movie that interests me is the one starring Basil Rathbone, nine years before he first played Sherlock Holmes. Similarly, the only Perry Mason film that interests me is the one starring Ricardo Cortez. Even on sale, these sets are too expensive for only the two films that interest me.

Now please allow me to drop a 50-megaton bomb of movie connection trivia: Philo Vance was played by William Powell, Basil Rathbone, and Warren William. William Powell played Nick Charles in The Thin Man, which was based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett. Hammett also wrote The Maltese Falcon, which was adapted into the famous movie starring Humphrey Bogart, but also two other versions starring Ricardo Cortez and Warren William, both of whom played Perry Mason. William Powell also had a role in the 1922 film Sherlock Holmes, about a famous character later played by Basil Rathbone.

Phew.

How are you able to keep track? Does Warner really keep their web site updated?

Anybody have an opinion on Amazon-MOD vs. Warner-MOD discs, quality-wise..?

I'd rather buy direct from WB, too, but I've not seen them run as good a sale as this, so I'm torn...

Warner Archive ran good sales on their box sets around the holidays last year. No guarantee they will this year but if it is important that you buy from them you may want to wait.

I would bet these are still made by WB... and I've never had any trouble returning anything to Amazon.
