Sam Simon (The Simpsons, Taxi) Has Terminal Cancer [UPDATE: Dead at 59]
I just read this on Yahoo! and didn't see another thread. A real shame.
The article (with a Q&A), which is about his philanthrophy and plans for his fortune after he passes, can be read here.
Five months ago, the nine-time Emmy winner -- whose post-Simpsons projects have included directing (The Drew Carey Show), hosting (the short-lived poker reality series Sam's Game for Playboy TV) and consulting (currently on FX's Anger Management) -- was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. He confirmed during a May 16 WTF With Marc Maron podcast that he was given the prognosis of three to six months to live and that he will donate nearly all of his sizable Simpsons royalties -- which he has said earn him "tens of millions" annually -- to charity.

That sucks. 58 is young.
He's lived a good life though, made tons of money, entertained billions, banged Jennifer Tilly in her prime, nailed a Playmate.

I knew he had it, so when I saw 'Sam Simon' in the thread title on the main forum I thought this was going to be a death thread. Relieved to see that it isn't, I hope he isn't suffering though. Such a good dude, why couldn't this happen to one of the assholes who caused that tiger to be killed at the San Fransisco zoo instead of Sam Simon?

this isn't new news. it was announced on the Howard Stern show many months ago.

One of the main driving forces behind the Simpsons in the beginning. The show doesn't exist in its current form without his input and guidance in those early years.

I've always wondered what the circumstances of him leaving the show were, as I get the impression there was some falling out between him and Matt Groening/James L Brooks. I find it curious that some Groening sycophants (like Phil Hendrie for example) have deminished Simon's contribution to The Simpsons.

I remember hearing a while back that he has this massive mansion in Malibu, or somewhere close to there, that is entirely populated with dogs he's rescued. His interviews I've heard on Stern were always a great listen. Bummer to hear he's got such little time.

It's very sad, we all have to go sometime. I hope I am in a position to do good for those that I love before I shed this mortal coil.

That's all any of us can really hope for.
His dog charity was on 60 Minutes or something ten or fifteen years ago. I thought it was incredible that he rolled all of his money over into charity.
If I recall correctly, he talked about being 'on the sidelines' when The Simpsons really took off. And then he stopped working on it altogether.
