Bose Corp. founder Amar Bose has died

I'm not a fan of most of his products, but he was a leader in his field.

Bose Corp. founder Amar Bose dies at 83

BOSTON (AP) — Amar Bose, founder and chairman of the audio technology company Bose Corp., has died. He was 83.

His death was announced Friday by the company’s president, Bob Maresca, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where Bose began his acoustics research and was on the faculty for more than 40 years.

Maresca said Bose “was an incredible mentor and inspiration to Bose employees around the world.”

Bose founded the company, based in the Boston suburb of Framingham, in 1964. It is known for making radios and noise-canceling headphones. Maresca said the company will remain privately held.

In 2011, Bose gave MIT the majority of Bose Corp. stock in the form of non-voting shares whose dividends are used to support education and research. MIT does not participate in management or governance of Bose Corp.

It's amazing what a stellar reputation these products have among the uninformed.

Re: Bose Corp. founder Amar Bose has died

I walked into a Bose store the other day. Their Lifestyle home theater systems were almost all over $2,000 for a receiver unit and some small plastic cubes. I think I even saw one of those surround sound bars for $2,000. I've read that website where someone disassembled some Bose speakers and found a lot of cheap components. But I recall it was several years old. I was curious if anything was different today.

Yeah, unfortunately, the website with the original analysis of Bose speakers is gone (I've had the link in my bookmarks for years: http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html). From what I recall, it was originally written in 2004. I can't imagine much has changed at all in the last 9 years, but Bose "fans" would just point to the age of the article and simply say, "Well, that was a long time ago. Their speakers sound better now."

I'd LOVE to see someone raise money to buy a new Bose system and do the same analysis.

Bose and Beats are in the same arena; overpriced, highly marketed, and terrible quality.

Re: Bose Corp. founder Amar Bose has died

The only good review of a Bose product that I ever read was regarding their noise cancelling headphones, and that was regarding how well they cancelled the outside noise. Too bad they couldn't have parlayed that into things like ear protection for construction workers and such

83's not a bad run and pretty nice about the donation to MIT.

My coworker is giving me a pair of Bose surround, I don't really want to take them.

Long time not being in a Bose thread, so I'll play devil's advocate here.

Do they have bad quality? Is the sound bad?
I think everyone agrees that they are overpriced. The most benign review I've read is that you can get the same sound/quality for $500 (that was a long time ago).

So, are they just CURRENTLY overpriced? Or do they really have bad quality, bad sound, etc.

Re: Bose Corp. founder Amar Bose has died

What Bose did was fill a niche market. If people buy something they perceive is valuable, are happy with it and prepared to pay for it who are we to argue.

I agree they are overpriced, but product sound decent. Most of us treat Audio vision as a hobby and read and discuss. An average consumer does not.

I put together a good system with Yamaha receiver and separate 5 speaker system ( about $500) for a friend who wanted it for their son as a Christmas present who was moving out. The got impatient and got him a Bose system for $600 !!

Bose did for sound what Starbucks did for coffee. That is after all Capitalism

Re: Bose Corp. founder Amar Bose has died

Yes, they sound bad. Yes, the drivers in their standard speaker systems have poor quality. Their "cube" speakers are so vastly overpriced it is hard to find words.

I was buying some tires recently. The guy used Bose as an analogy to describe the higher quality tires he was offering at twice the price of a lesser model. I couldn't prevent the look on my face. And I tried! The cheap tires were pretty cheap, thin and pitiful-looking in comparison. The problem with the Bose analogy is that the Bose are cheap and thin and yet more expensive.
