The Bridge -- New FX Series (90 minutes) -- "Pilot" -- 7/10/13

Series Synopsis:

The Bridge is a present-day crime thriller exploring the tensions on the US-Mexico border. When an American judge known for her anti-immigration views is found dead on the bridge connecting El Paso and Juarez, Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) from El Paso PD must work with her Mexican counterpart from Chihuahua State Police, Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir), to catch a serial killer operating on both sides of the border. Marco understands the slippery politics of Mexican law enforcement, and while his police force slowly succumbs to the pressures and demands of the cartel, he's one of the last good men in the department. He's charming, but also cunning as he will do whatever it takes to get what he needs. This does not sit well with Sonya, who has Asperger's and strictly follows rules as well as protocol. Her candid and off-putting personality fuels an unforgiving drive for truth. The case quickly pulls them into a string of murders on the border, a scene already consumed by illegal immigration, drug trafficking, violence and prostitution.

Written by Meredith Stiehm (Homeland) & Elwood Reid; directed by Gerardo Naranjo.

13 episode order. Premieres Wednesday night at 10pm.

Really looking forward to this one. Dark Gritty drama taking place in the U.S. and Mexico. Has tremendous potential.

The few previews I've seen did not really even hint at what this was. From the descrption it looks worth checking out.

The later previews gave a little bit away, but yeah, the ones from a few months ago were just odd.

Sounds interesting. When they first started airing the ad, I had to Google it, to know about the show.

Re: The Bridge -- New FX Series (90 minutes) -- "Pilot" -- 7/10/13

I didn't like the NYT review. It keeps comparing it with the original, and why the original it's better. It's like she already made her mind before watching the show. I didn't read the good reviews mentioned above, but I was interested in reading what issues the show have, that's why I read the NYT review, but wasn't really convinced by the author. We will see tonight.

Overwhelmingly positive reviews from the majority of TV critics.

Her character has Asperger's syndrome. She is supposed to act like that.

I figured it was something like that. Did they explicitly mention it in the episode? I must have missed if they did.

The Diane Kruger character in the original Danish/Swedish series also has Asperger's.

Watching it right now. Almost done and no it wasn't explicitly said that she has that condition.

Diane Kruger's character is incredibly irritating without being interesting. The rest of the show is decent, but not good enough to make up for how terrible the lead is.

FX hasn't done wrong by me so far. The last portion was actually tense for me because I usually don't watch detective/police shows. Plus, I've got the hots for Diane Kruger, so I'll watch unless it gets truly awful at some point.

Re: The Bridge -- New FX Series (90 minutes) -- "Pilot" -- 7/10/13

I wasn't blown away by it, but I thought it was a pretty good start.

I read previously that Kruger's character was going to be "different" so I had a feeling that would ruffle a few feathers.

Anyways, I like the setting and the premise with the killer operating on both sides of the border has a lot of potential.

Meredith Stiehm, who created this show, was a Writer/Producer on Homeland and she wrote some really good episodes. I trust that she has a plan with this show and it's characters.

at some of the fucking idiots on The Bridge Facebook page. Some of them actually complained about the subtitles. One idiot actually wrote that he wants to actually watch the show and not have to read shit on the screen.

I agree... She kept turning me off with her irritating preformance. The rest of good and I will watch a couple more episodes before I make up my mind, if I like this show or not.

I liked it. I'm evenly split on the leads -- not a fan of Sonya but I do like Marco so it's pretty much a wash. As mentioned above, I hope the Homeland vet brings some strong storytelling to the season. Also, they did a good job staging that car bomb sequence...I found it quite intense.

Yeah, agree 100%. Beyond annoying. And right, they didn't even try explain why she acts like that, always has headphones in, has no social skills etc. (How hard would it have been to have, say, her boss explain what she's got to the Mexican dude she was a total B to, and thus also informing the audience?)
But let's send her to let the judge's husband know his wife has been brutally murdered and cut in half. I like the guy from Monk she works with, and I thought the Mexican detective was great, but man I hope they do something with her character, otherwise no way can I stick with it.

Re: The Bridge -- New FX Series (90 minutes) -- "Pilot" -- 7/10/13

I'm beyond sick of cop shows, way too many, so I do like that this has an interesting and different setting and a main character that's different..just not sure like others are saying that I like the type of different..she could get old quick. Also her accent would slip out some which is the most annoying. Otherwise I liked it quite a bit..some good potential.

I've loved every FX show until Anger Management which is the worst show I've ever seen. Now I was hyped for this but considering I've already got them on a losing streak, I didn't care for the pilot, and it reminded me of The Following and The Killing, 2 shows I should have given up on earlier, strongly considering not watching the 2nd ep.

Think about the cast/performances/uniqueness of American Horror Story and compare it to this.

I'm with you on The Following and The Killing, but I'd be surprised if it ends up sucking as bad as those shows..since FX has always chosen wisely on dramas at least. If it were AMC I'd be less sure.

I liked it. Kruger's portrayal was fantastic. Her demeanor and speech patters were annoying, but it's supposed to be.

Any guesses on how the widow lady ties into everything and what was in the basement?

Really? There's people out there who thought The Following and The Killing sucked?

And they tried THIS show which, by all preview indicators, had a similar feel?

All due respect fellow DVDtalkers, but I'd stick with NCIS and the like.
