Orange is the new Black - Season 1 Thread - 7/11/13 (Netflix) - from creator of Weeds

Netflix will premiere its upcoming original series "Orange Is the New Black" on Thursday, July 11, 2013. Created by Jenji Kohan ("Weeds"), the comedic drama starring Taylor Schilling is set in a women's prison and is based on the U.S. best-selling memoir by Piper Kerman. All thirteen one-hour episodes in the series from Lionsgate Television will be available at launch. Netflix members will have access to "Orange Is the New Black" at 12:01 AM PDT in all territories where Netflix is available - U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Latin America, Brazil and the Nordics. "Orange Is the New Black" follows engaged Brooklynite Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), whose decade-old relationship with drug-runner Alex (Laura Prepon) results in her arrest and year-long detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper must trade her comfortable New York life with fiance Larry (Jason Biggs) for an orange prison jumpsuit and a baffling prison culture where she is forced to question everything she believes and form unexpected new alliances with a group of eccentric and outspoken inmates. The series' diverse ensemble also includes Kate Mulgrew, Natasha Lyonne, Pablo Schreiber, Danielle Brooks, Laverne Cox and Taryn Manning.

PRINCIPAL CAST INFORMATION:
·Jason Biggs as Larry Bloom
· Kate Mulgrew as Galina "Red" Reznikov
· Laura Prepon as Alex Vause
· Maria Dizzia as Polly Harper
· Michael Harney as Sam Healy
· Michelle Hurst as Miss Claudette
· Natasha Lyonne as Nicky Nichols
· Pablo Schreiber as Pornstache
· Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman

Premieres on July 11th, but it was already renewed for a 2nd season on Thursday.

This will be the thread of record for when it actually premieres. Just thought I would post this a little early for those unaware of it. I like Taylor Schilling, so I will give it a shot.

Seen the trailer on Netflix a couple of weeks ago. This looks like a show that I'm glad all the episodes are available at once because I don't know if I'd keep up with it otherwise.

That.

I'll give it a shot. Jason Biggs and Lauren Prepon are the draws for me.

Bump

All 13 episodes have now been posted. I look forward to all the insightful commentary.

I'm trying to catch up on other things first. Will get back to the Netflix shows when I get caught up.

Maybe if I get a moment I'll try episode 1.

I will probably start watching this week. Will there be one thread for the entire season?

Yeah like Arrested Development, I think one thread is good enough.

Watched the first 5 eps. Not a perfect show but I'm really enjoying it - has a lot of the elements that made the first few seasons of Weeds so great...and I love Taylor Schilling.

Re: Orange is the new Black -- from the creator of Weeds -- 7/11/13 (Netflix)

Wasn't really planning on watching it right away, but I watched the 1st episode tonight.

Pretty good, not perfect. It's basically a 1 hour drama with some dark humor mixed into it.

I thought the non-linear storytelling was interesting. A pretty good amount of R rated nudity and some sex in this 1st episode. Really liked Taylor Schilling as Piper. However, casting Jason Biggs as her love interest is an odd choice. I didn't really feel any chemistry between them.

On the other hand, Laura Prepon as her former Lesbian lover was a good pick.

Definitely intrigued to continue on.

I am really enjoying this show. About 6 episodes in. Definitely gets stronger the more episodes you get in.

Always happy to see actors from The Wire get work. First episode was pretty good.

Hrmm. Cautiously optimistic for this one. I loved the first five seasons of Weeds but the last couple...yuck. Does anyone know if Netflix plans on putting their original series on DVD?

House of Cards is already on DVD/BD through Sony Pictures Home video.

The rest not yet.

Took me this long to recognize Kate Mulgrew!

I'm really enjoying this show. It has some slow parts, and some of the back stories aren't the most interesting, but overall it's definitely quality programming.

I'm really, really impressed with Netflix's original programming so far. They might be an HBO rival programming wise in the near future if they keep this up.

So the crazy girl who is in love with Piper early on makes me insanely uncomfortable.

Good job on casting the lead:

Good job on casting the lead:

The real piper looks much tougher but yes they look a lot alike. Could easily pass for mother and daughter.

Finished the season, and thought it was terrific. Really loved how balanced and multi-dimensional all the characters were. Jason Biggs probably the weak link in the show but he is not terrible. Hope there is a season 2.

A ressurected Arrested Development, an engaged Kevin Spacey and Laura Prepons' boobs - I think Netflix is on to something...

It was renewed for Season 2 before it debuted. The guys at Netflix apparently really liked it too.
