Bad Teacher 2 in development

The expansion of the Bad Teacher universe knows no bounds. On top of the announcement that CBS had added a Bad Teacher spinoff series to their fall roster, Columbia Pictures announced Thursday that they’d begun development on a sequel to the 2011 Cameron Diaz film.

Bad Teacher may have been a critical dark horse (it boasts a 44% Rotten Tomatoes score), but the raunchy comedy, which also starred Jason Segel and Justin Timberlake, was a runaway summer box office success, bringing in $216.2 million worldwide on an estimated $20 million budget.

According to the announcement, the project is being developed for Cameron Diaz, but she has not officially signed on for the sequel yet. The busy actress is currently at work on The Other Woman with Leslie Mann and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and has a number of projects lined up, including Agent: Century 21 with Benicio Del Toro and Kasdan’s Sex Tape.

Jake Kasdan (Orange County) will return to direct the sequel off of a script from Justin Malen, a screenwriter best known at this point for making the 2011 Black List for his screenplay Bastards. The first film was co-written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who both wrote for The Office.

“We love Justin’s take on the material,” said Columbia Pictures President of Production Hannah Minghella in the press release. “It hits all the notes that made the first film such a breakthrough hit and also takes the characters in a new direction that is fresh and fun.”

Bad Teacher had a great concept and a good cast - unfortunately it just wasn't very funny. That's fixable, maybe.

I thought there was going to be a TV series based on the movie as well.

Agreed. I'd heard lots of good things prior to seeing Bad Teacher. Ultimately, I just didn't care for it.

The first thing they need to do is replace Cameron Diaz. Not funny at all.

Bad Teacher is a perfect example of trying too hard to be funny and offensive.

I felt like I could hear the filmmakers saying "look how raunchy we're being! Oh, we're so bad, aren't we?" When in fact there was nothing particularly funny or raunchy about it.

I like Cameron Diaz a lot, and I thought the previews were pretty funny. The movie itself was just okay.

Re: Bad Teacher 2 in development

We can't get a Dumb and Dumber sequel, but this gets made.

BTW, I'm shocked the original only cost $20 million, due to the salaries involved. I thought Cameron Diaz was commanding around $10 million per film, and Timberlake and Segel shouldn't come by too cheaply either.

It wasn't some arthouse film. Were they friends of the director and doing him a favor or something? Or did they just get a cut of the gross?

Re: Bad Teacher 2 in development

I had to go with a friend to see the 1st one. She loved it. I thought aside from Siegal arguing with the kid it was pretty damn boring. And jesus tittty fucking Christ did Diaz's skin look like shit up close on that screen. Leathery as fuck.

Still haven't seen the first one.

Diaz has looked like a leather purse for years now.
