Hot lesbians win Palme d'Or at Cannes: 'Blue is the Warmest Color'

My name is eXcentris and I approve of this win.

Cannes Film Festival: Lesbian drama wins Palme d'Or

( at the director getting in the way...)

Blue is the Warmest Colour, an intimate love story about two young French women, has won the Palme d'Or for best film at the Cannes Film Festival.

It has attracted attention for its explicit sex scenes as well as the acclaimed performances of actresses Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux.

Hollywood veteran Bruce Dern won best actor for his performance in Nebraska.

And French star Berenice Bejo, known for silent film The Artist, won best actress for her role in The Past.

The winners were picked from the 20 films in competition and were named at the festival's closing ceremony on Sunday.

Blue is the Warmest Colour is a three-hour coming-of-age movie in which Exarchopoulos plays a 15-year-old who falls in love with an older woman, played by Seydoux.

Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche, it won rave reviews in Cannes, being described as "epic yet intimate" by The Guardian.

But it also shocked some critics. Variety magazine said it contained "the most explosively graphic lesbian sex scenes in recent memory".

The Hollywood Reporter said the "sprawling drama" would "raise eyebrows" as it crossed the barrier "between performance and the real deal".

Some had questioned whether the sex scenes may make it too explicit for the top prize.

But director Steven Spielberg, who chaired the jury, told reporters: "I think it will get a lot of play... I think this film carries a very strong message, a very positive message."

In an unusual move, Spielberg awarded the prize to the two lead actresses as well as the director.

One of the sex scenes is said to be 10 minutes long. And in my opinion, it's just porn for the arthouse crowd. They'll make up other excuses for 'liking' the film and seeing some 'deep meaning' in it. But it's the sex scenes that really sell it, but they're too ashamed to admit so. That's what all the 'erotic' indie/art films ever amount to in my opinion.

We will have to see. I agree that graphic/unsimulated sex is generally used as a way of getting the movie some attention, but it does not mean that movie isn't any good. Some of them I thought were excellent (Center of the World, Bully, Shortbus, Dogtooth).

And what does "the most explosively graphic lesbian sex scenes in recent memory" mean. At the risk of sounding uncouth, does the movie have close ups of pussy licking or fingering? I wish the articles would just come out and say so.

Cool - it sounds like they didn't just go with the safest pick, though many people had predicted they would with Spielberg at the head of the jury.

The director's last film, Secret of the Grain, was very good (if a bit too long.) That and the very positive reviews give me hope that it's a bit more than just artsy porn.

IFC picked this up for the US, so there's a pretty good chance it'll get a (presumably uncensored) Criterion release in 2014. (Which I only mention since I'm probably not going to want to watch this in theaters - too awkward.)

It's all part of the homosexual agenda to destroy traditional film!

Re: Hot lesbians win Palme d'Or at Cannes

'La Graine et le Mulet' (Secret of the Grain) was much too long and the documentary/"cinema verite" style can be a tad grating. Overall, I liked it but it really tested my patience. Kechiche normally uses non actors/first time actors and while there's a plot outline, the dialogue is usually mostly improvised.

Aside from Lea Seydoux not being a newcomer, and considering this most recent effort is 3 hours long, I'm betting it has a similar style, improvised dialogue, and scenes that go on forever... Of course, torrid lesbian sex might help alleviate the length issue in this case.

So...when does this movie get a release in America? As screw it, when's the Blu-Ray come out? I think we all know what we want to see!

The Artist really saved her from what could have been a lackluster career. I saw her in a SyFy movie about the same time Artist hit theaters in America about mutant lions. I actually did a double take and had to hit IMDB to confirm if it was her.

Yes and no. It's all fake.

From CraveOnline:
CraveOnline: The love scenes are so beautiful. Of course I know as actors there are ways to fake things but it looks so real and intimate. Were there by any chance scenes where you went ahead and got close and made contact?
Lea Seydoux: Oh, have sex?

CraveOnline: No, but touch each other for real.
Lea Seydoux: Oh no. No, we had fake pussys. It was like SFX. It was well done. It was not very nice because it was fake.

CraveOnline: Thank you for saying that because I didn’t know how to full on ask that, but that’s the part that looked so real.
Lea Seydoux: Yeah, it was, so we could do anything. Like it was real, but fake. It was a mold. If the scenes were for real, I wouldn’t have done this for sure. I can do many things on screen but I can’t make love. It’s impossible. It was a mold, we did it in an SFX studio. For example, at the end, we don’t really see, it’s very, very subtle but we have in the scene in the cafe, we can see that we are aging a little. We look a little older. We had as well some things here [under our eyes] to look older. We did a real mold and every morning when we had to do the sex scenes, the guy was coming in putting it on. We had to wait like two hours to put it on.
