Broadcast Upfronts 2013

Figured we should stash some of these things somewhere. The pilot for Almost Human is being directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Session 9, Fringe), Rake is directed by Sam Raimi, Sleepy Hollow by Len Wiseman, and Gang Related by Allen Hughes.

Fox
Fox just made its new drama series pickups, ordering four shows — Rake starring Greg Kinnear, Gang Related starring Ramon Rodriguez, Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci’s Sleepy Hollow, and Almost Human, from the Fringe duo of J.H. Wyman and J.J. After last season’s experiment with Mob Doctor, Fox went unapologetically male with its new hours, all toplined by male actors — Kinnear (Rake), Rodriguez (Gang Related), Brit Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow), — who is poised to be one of the breakout stars next season — and Karl Urban and Michael Ealy (Almost Human). I hear Rake is eyed for a midseason launch in the mold of another starring Fox drama vehicle, this season’s The Following. The drama pickups assure continuous presence on Fox for Abrams, Wyman, Kurtzman and Orci. Fringe, which Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci created and Wyman ran, finished its run on the network earlier this season. Studio-wise, Fox spread the wealth, picking up two projects from its sister studio and one each from Warner Bros. and Sony. Two of the pilots were directed by big-name feature helmers, Sam Raimi (Rake) and Len Wiseman (Sleepy Hollow). Fox’s other hourlong pilots, Delirium, Boomerang and The List, are dead. The network’s comedy pickups are expected shortly. Here are descriptions of Fox’s new drama series along with first-glimpse photos:

ALMOST HUMAN (working title)
From Emmy Award-winning executive producer J.J. Abrams and creator/executive producer J.H. Wyman and starring Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and Emmy Award nominee Lili Taylor, Almost Human (working title) is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely connection is forged when a cop with an aversion to robots and a robot with unexpected emotional responses investigate cases in a brave new world. Almost Human (wt) is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The series is created by J.H. Wyman, who wrote the pilot. The series is executive-produced by Wyman, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Kathy Lingg (Person of Interest, Revolution, Fringe) and Reid Shane (Fringe) are co-executive producers. Brad Anderson (Fringe, The Killing) directed and served as co-executive producer on the pilot.

GANG RELATED
Gang Related, a gritty new action drama, follows Ryan Lopez (Ramon Rodriguez), a rising star in Los Angeles’ elite Gang Task Force – led by SAM CHAPEL (Emmy Award winner Terry O’Quinn) — who teams up with longtime Task Force member CASSIUS GREEN (RZA) to take on three of the city’s most dangerous gangs, including one he has ties to. Gang Related is from Chris Morgan Productions, Skeeter Rosenbaum Productions, Imagine Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television. The series is created and written by Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast Five). The series is executive-produced by Morgan, Scott Rosenbaum (The Shield, Chuck), Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer (24, A Beautiful Mind) and Francie Calfo (The Great Escape, The Playboy Club). Allen Hughes (Dead Presidents, Book of Eli, Menace II Society) directed and served as an executive producer on the pilot.

RAKE
Academy Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Greg Kinnear makes his broadcast television series debut with the bold new legal drama Rake, from executive producer Peter Tolan and creator/executive producer Peter Duncan, who created the hit Australian series of the same name. RAKE centers on Keegan Deane, one of life’s great addicts, a brilliant and frustratingly charming criminal defense attorney, whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one. He takes on the cases that nobody else will touch, ruled by a resolute optimism, belief in justice and dogged determination to defend those who seem beyond redemption – much like himself. Rake is produced by Fedora Entertainment and Essential Media & Entertainment Pty Ltd., in association with Sony Pictures Television. The series is created and written by Peter Duncan (creator of the original Australian series). The series is executive-produced by Duncan, Peter Tolan (Rescue Me, Analyze This), Michael Wimer (2012), Richard Roxburgh (Mission: Impossible II, Moulin Rouge) and Ian Collie. Kinnear and Leslie Tolan (Rescue Me, The Job) are co-executive producers. Sam Raimi (Oz The Great and Powerful, Spider-Man franchise) directed and served as an executive producer on the pilot.

SLEEPY HOLLOW
From co-creators/executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the Star Trek and Transformers franchises, Fringe), the thrilling new action-adventure Sleepy Hollow is a modern-day retelling of Washington Irving’s classic. ICHABOD CRANE (Tom Mison) is resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction and that he is humanity’s last hope, forcing him to team up with a contemporary police officer (Nicole Beharie) to unravel a mystery that dates all the way back to the founding fathers. Sleepy Hollow is from K/O Paper Products in association with 20th Century Fox Television. The series is co-created by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Phillip Iscove and Len Wiseman (Hawaii Five-0, Underworld and Total Recall). The series is executive-produced by Kurtzman, Orci and Wiseman and Heather Kadin. Iscove serves as supervising producer. Wiseman directed the pilot.
NBC
Pilots that are not moving forward: The Gates; Joe, Joe & Jane; The Secret Lives of Husbands and Wives, Bloodline, comic book adaptation The Sixth Gun, Hatfields and McCoys and comedy Holding Pattern.

Deception has been canned.

Glad that aren't bothering with the modern Hatfield and McCoys.

Didn't Kevin Costner just do one for History or some such channel last year though as a miniseries?

Re: Broadcast Upfronts 2013

Just reading the details for the new FOX shows, this pilot season already sounds far better than last year.

I'm not saying they all sound great (Sleepy Hollow sounds silly), but there were so few shows a year ago that even sounded like they would be good (Last Resort was one of the few, and look where that went).

Yes. This would've been a cheap cash in, setting it in a modern times.

Re: Broadcast Upfronts 2013

Costner's was historical "based on a true story", the NBC show would have been modern day fiction taking cues from the original.

Curious about Almost Human and Sleepy Hollow. Almost Human seems like Alien Nation meets I Robot and I'll definitely give it a shot. Len Wiseman's involvement in Sleepy Hollow worries me... but the concept is interesting and Kurtzman/Orci's involvement makes me hopeful there will be something behind this.

What a terrible idea that would have been. I actually think a modern-day retelling might have worked if they set it in a 'Winter's Bone' type setting, but what they were proposing sounded ridiculous.

Re: Broadcast Upfronts 2013

Ah yes, it's that time of year when the networks put on their dog and pony show. The only time you will ever hear the words "synergy" and "multi-platform". Talking about "fresh and innovative" new shows they all know won't last beyond Christmas. It's time to admit the broadcast network model is a dinosaur and needs a total revamp.

Or Asimov's The Caves of Steel.

(Or for the less literate, Holmes and Yo-Yo .)

They're adapting Rake to a US audience (on broadcast TV no less)? Meh. The Aussie original that was on DirecTV's Audience Channel was great.

Re: Broadcast Upfronts 2013

After yanking shows like Deception on Thursday and the much-deserved Animal Practice earlier this season, NBC began making series orders this morning in preparation for its fall presentation to advertisers Monday.

Among the pickups: About A Boy, which is a comedy starring David Walton and Minnie Driver which centers on a bachelor whose primary goal in life is avoiding any kind of responsibility until he meets a geeky young boy; and Believe, a J.J. Abrams joint about an unlikely relationship develops between a young girl with a gift and a man sprung from prison who has been tasked with protecting her from the evil elements that hunt her power. Johnny Sequoyah, Jake McLaughlin, Delroy Lindo will star.

NBC also gave a thumbs up to Crisis, a drama starring Dermot Mulroney and Gillian Anderson. Here’s the logline: When Washington’s most powerful players are pulled into an international conspiracy, an unlikely puppeteer will bring everyone from CEOs to The President of the United States to their knees by threatening the things they hold most dear. Forced together by dire circumstances these power brokers, the FBI and a rookie secret service agent must unravel the mystery to take back control of their lives.

Finally, Sean Hayes got an official invite to return to NBC, where he starred in Will & Grace. NBC picked up Sean Saves the World, a comedy starring Hayes as a guy who must figure out how to parent his 14-year-old daughter, who just moved in, while navigating a temperamental new boss at work.

Crisis reminds me of Rubicon and Zero Hour, and I'm sure it'll suffer the same fate.

Fox Comedies

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE
From Dan Goor and Michael Schur, the Emmy Award-winning writers/producers of “Parks and Recreation,” and starring Emmy Award winners Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher, BROOKLYN NINE-NINE is a single-camera ensemble comedy about what happens when a detective who doesn’t take anything seriously gets a new “by-the-book” boss who wants him to grow up and respect the badge.

DADS
DADS – The new live-action, multi-camera comedy from Emmy Award winner Seth MacFarlane, Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, the creatively outrageous team behind “Ted” and FOX’s FAMILY GUY, stars Emmy Award winner Seth Green and Emmy Award nominee Giovanni Ribisi as two successful guys – and childhood best friends – whose lives get turned upside down when their pain-in-the-neck patriarchs (Martin Mull and Academy Award and Emmy Award nominee Peter Riegert) move in.

ENLISTED
ENLISTED is an irreverent and heartfelt military-set single-camera family comedy starring Geoff Stults that follows three brothers getting to know each other again on a small Florida Army base and the group of misfits who surround them.

US & THEM
Based on the hugely popular and multiple-award-winning BBC 3 series “Gavin and Stacey” and starring Emmy Award nominee Jason Ritter and Alexis Bledel, US & THEM is an ensemble single-camera comedy about a young couple, whose path to happily-ever-after is complicated by the screwed-up circus of people closest to them.

SURVIVING JACK (working title)
SURVIVING JACK (working title) is a new single-camera ensemble comedy based on best-selling author Justin Halpern’s semi-autobiographical book, “I Suck at Girls.” Set in 1990s Southern California, Emmy Award nominee Christopher Meloni stars as a man becoming a dad, as his son is becoming a man, in a time before “coming of age” was something you could Google.

Re: Broadcast Upfronts 2013

I don't really like David Walton, but I'll check out About a Boy, since the producer is Jason Katims.

With Jason Ritter's pilot getting picked up at FOX, I guess Mark is officially gone from Parenthood.

Re: Broadcast Upfronts 2013

Criminal Minds has been renewed for a 9th season with Kirsten Vangsness and AJ Cook on board, now with sizable pay increases.

The CW has picked up The Tomorrow People, The 100, Reign and Oxygen.

Both are from Warner Bros. TV. ‘Tomorrow People” is based on a 1970s U.K. series about a group of young people who rep the next stage in human evolution (wait, don’t all teenagers think that?). “The 100″ is set nearly 100 years in the future after a nuclear disaster has destroyed civilization.
Reign is about the teenage years of Mary, Queen of Scots, starting in 1557 France.

Oxygen is about nine aliens secretly integrated into a suburban high school.

Is John Mulaney's NBC sitcom pilot among the canceled or is it still a possibility?
