Playstation Controllers To USB

I know that you can use Playstation controllers on a computer, but I'm a bit confused as to how to do it. I did a search and found this...

"You can also use ps3 controllers on the PC without first buying a ps3.
Just buy a controller (even if its 2nd hand) for about $30AU new or on ebay (much cheaper) and you can run it using a standard ps2 cable into your pc. (I did this) You'll need additional software for your computer (about 2mb)"

Firstly, what's a PS2 cable ? Secondly, I also found some sort of adapter that lets you plug in a controller.
http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-Co.../dp/B000F6BGXY

What would be the best way to do this ? Also, according to the little snippet I posted, which says that you'll need additional software for a PS3 controller, where would I find that ?

Re: Playstation Controllers To USB

That's an awfully convoluted way to say "Buy a PS3->USB adapter."

Re: Playstation Controllers To USB

I don't know what they mean by "a standard PS2 cable" for a PS3 controller, but that thing on Amazon will only work with Dual Shock and Dual Shock 2 controllers, not the Dual Shock 3 or Sixaxis.

Motioninjoy is the name of the common software that works with the PS3 controller, and it is digitally signed, so it will work with a 64-bit system: http://www.motioninjoy.com/. I would suggest trying the local version so it doesn't have to connect out to somewhere. You'd have to look in their forums, which unfortunately are overrun by spam.

One caveat is that if you use it wirelessly via Bluetooth, it will take over the BT adapter. I mean, after you install the MIJ driver, the BT won't work with anything else. So you'd need a dedicated BT adapter if you have other BT devices you want to use on the same computer. However, it will support up to 4 controllers.

Regardless of what you choose, you'll need an Xbox 360 controller emulator for most recent games. MIJ includes this, but if you went the PS2 route you'd need to download it separately.

BTW, I hear that Macs natively support the DS3.

Hell, even if you already have a wireless 360 controller, all you need to do is purchase this.

Windows will download the drivers automatically once it realizes there's a 360 controller connecting to it.

Re: Playstation Controllers To USB

A Wii Classic Controller Pro and a USB adapter made by Mayflash (they're common on Ebay) is good too.

Yes, that is the easiest thing to do. The PS3 solution is more for people who have the controllers already, or maybe they just prefer it. It is better for games controlled by the D-pad.

The Wii CCP sounds good, but it lacks analog triggers. That could be a problem for games with a driving component like GTA.

Re: Playstation Controllers To USB

I'm looking to play PS2 games with PCSX2. Specifically, The Thing. Don't have a playstation 3. All the info for motionjoy says Playstation 3. Plus, it's really hard to understand how to do anything with Motioninjoy. It's all in engrish.

Yes, Motioninjoy is only for PS3 controllers. That thing on Amazon should work for PS2.
