What Movie Will Break $200 million Opening Weekend Next?

I doubt the new Star Trek or Iron Man will do it. I think there's a chance it might go all the way to the next Avenger's installment if it comes before the new Star Wars movies.

Iron Man 3 could be huge but $200 million is a lot of dough.

I doubt Iron Man III gets much more than $150 million. Avengers II will do better.

The new Star Wars movie will have an insane opening weekend. Whatever records stand at that point for opening weekends, it'll break them.

I don't see any talking dog movies coming out soon so it's going to be a while.

Avengers 2, most likely. Possibly The Hunger Games 2. I don't think Avatar 2 will do it as it will most likely have a long runtime.

If the advertising for Godzilla is really strong, I think it could have a huge opening. But $200 mil is probably out of reach. I don't see anything outside of Avengers 2 or Episode 7 that would have a legit chance.

Star Trek (2009) is the highest grossing in that series at $257m domestic, I don't see #2 opening to nearly that in a weekend but that reboot proved insanely popular, especially to non-Trekkies.

Either The Avengers 2 or Catching Fire: The Hunger Games.

Iron Man 3 will be lucky to do more than $150M its opening weekend.

Batman is done, Harry Potter is done, Twilight is done.

Not Iron Man, not Star Trek, not Superman.

I see a lot of blockbusters, but nothing to break 200 million on opening weekend.

Has filming even started on Avengers yet? Or Jurassic Park IV?

Pre-production has already started on Guardians of the Galaxy (which has a release date of August 2014) and filming begins in June. If the schedule is similar to the first film, pre-production on The Avengers 2 will begin once Whedon delivers the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot. Marvel has already announced that the film will be released on May 1st, 2015 guaranteeing them another $200 million plus opening weekend similar to the first film.

I see Marvel sticking to their guns. I see Universal moving back the date on Jurassic Park IV within the next few months. Jurassic Park IV will be lucky to break $75M on its opening weekend.

Hunger Games 2 Catching Fire. Remember the last one made 152 mil opening weekend. Now they can advertise that it has an Oscar winner

I would agree if it weren't for the fact that unlike Avengers, it won't be having a 3D surcharge for most of its showings. Here's hoping they don't decide to make it 3D just for that purpose.

Hard to say, really. A film has to have a lot going at one time to secure that number. Avengers 2 isn't even a lock necessarily.

Godzilla would never open that big. Really strong Godzilla marketing fooled people once, and that'll likely keep the new one from hitting a major high. I'll say it opens at $60m tops. And that's coming from someone who wants it to be mega.

The first Avengers had three major things going for it in that regard: quite a bit of build-up+great reviews+3D surcharge for most screenings.

That is the one I was thinking (still suprised how much I actually liked it) or Avengers 2.

Technically two if you count Philip Seymour Hoffman.

They should do the whole thing for their Cast:

Starring:
Academy Award Winner Jennifer Lawrence
Academy Award Winner Philip Seymour Hoffman
Academy Award Nominated Actor Woody Harrelson
Academy Award Nominated Actor Stanley Tucci
and Elizabeth Banks

Was always amazed Twilight didn't try to promote with:
From the Academy Award Winning Writer of Gods and Monsters (sure he was director in this case but eh)

I notice studios tend to shy away from mentioning Oscar winners or other noteworthy efforts by actors and filmmakers when it comes to franchises. Notice that Skyfall didn't tout that it had two Oscar winners on board either (Mendes and Bardem). They only do it if it's something entirely new.

Not enough time to do a post-convert anyway with over thirty minutes of footage being shot specifically in 15/70 IMAX.

The first film did $11M in its opening weekend in 268 IMAX theaters alone. It only had a run in IMAX for a single week (it saw a week re-release later in the year), but that single week did over $15M in ticket sales.

Now with an actual reason to see it in IMAX (the first film looked like shit), I'm sure the sequel will have a larger opening weekend than that of the first.

I don't think academy award winners are going to sway new people into seeing a sequel to the Hunger Games.

I think it's going to be the next Hunger Games movie as well.

Whatever movie comes out when the greedy studios and theater owners decide to raise prices yet again and the public continues to bend over and take it.
