The 85th Annual Academy Awards (H: MacFarlane, 2013) — The Reviews Thread
figured this would be ok with the other at 30+ pgs and just want to see what others would rate the actual show...
so i am really perplexed how the show and Seth are getting mixed reviews. i really thought it and he were just awful throughout. the tributes to Bond and musicals were terrible and the banter with presenters was just painful.
of course, that is just my opinion. but i am trying to see the good in the show from others opinions/responses.
so how many stars would you give the actual show?
just because i like most of the results i am giving it...

I thought McFarlane gave a mostly solid effort - his only misstep imo was that endless Shatner sketch. As for the show itself, the musical "celebration" was poorly thought out and seemed to forget almost a hundred years of movie music. The Bond tribute was also lame (except for Dame Bassey). Other than that, it was business as usual, and I don't have a problem with it.

It was ok. Some things were kind of funny, and I generally like it when the awards are spread a bit (as long as things I hate don't win). A couple were a surprise to me, so that's good. Too many songs, but I wasn't mostly bored. I've seen much worse Academy Awards shows (that Bond montage was really crappy though, especially after all the hype about it).

Just read a couple reviews, one was Daily News that said he was indeed mediocre and that the Shatner bit was outdated and he should be deemed irrelevant. I didn't mind the jokes necessarily, but the show as a whole just seemed disjointed and poorly written.
Anyone know the credentials of the writers of the show?

Really? I'm tempted to close this thread for sheer redundancy...but whatever.

I don't watch Family Guy and haven't seen Ted but I enjoyed it a lot. Loved the Sound of Music call back for Christopher Plummer, the no-introduction of Meryl Streep and a lot of the other stuff. Solid 4 stars from me.

I'm more outraged at this thread than Arpeggi was at the Obama appearance last night.

3/5 stars
I thought that Seth was a good host, but the show itself just seemed very oddly put together.

Recent hosts have been insufferable and Seth is generally entertaining. Honestly, he was born to host shit like this. Could the material have been stronger? Yes. But, again, compare him to recent hosts and he was fine.
And, really, blame the producers and those needless, stupid musical numbers where the producers paid tribute to their own fucking overrated musicals. I mean, what was that? It would be like James Cameron producing the Oscars and having a "tribute to recent science fiction" that ignores 2001 and Star Wars and fellates The Abyss and Avatar. Actually, that would be much better than what we got.

I thought Seth MacFarlane did a great job as host. The weaknesses in the show were with almost everything else.
I would like him to come back and host again but with more freedom next time to do even more of his type stuff.
