The Raid 2: Berandal (2014, Evans)

Cause the world wants it...

The Raid 2 Begins Production in Jakarta
Source: PT Merantau Films and XYZ Films
February 1, 2013

PT Merantau Films and XYZ Films today announced the start of production on The Raid 2 (titled The Raid 2: Berandal in Indonesia). The film reunites writer/director Gareth Huw Evans with actor Iko Uwais, who will be reprising his starring role.

In addition to Uwais, the international cast includes Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad and Roy Marten. The film is currently lensing in Jakarta, Indonesia and is scheduled to shoot for over 100 days. Line producing the film is Daiwanne Ralie, with Matthew Flannery and Dimas Imam Subhono serving as directors of photography.

Picking up right where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.

The Raid premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, where it took home the Audience Award in the Midnight Madness section. It went on to play at Sundance and SXSW, before enjoying a theatrical release in the United States through Sony Pictures Classics. The film is approaching $15M in global box office.

“We’re incredibly excited to start the next chapter of 'The Raid' story,” said XYZ Films. “Gareth introduced a rich and fertile world in the first film, and we’re eager to see him expand on that vision with Berandal.”

“To all our fans thank you so much for your support. We can't wait to come back and show you what we have been working on,” said Evans. “We'll be there in 2014 with a film bigger, better and bloodier! Wish us luck.”

Ario Sagantoro is producing for PT Merantau Films, along with Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer, Aram Tertzakian and Todd Brown for XYZ Films. Executive producing are Rangga Maya Barack-Evans and Irwan D. Mussry.

At the cost of 1.1 million? Not bad.

I really loved The Raid, but I'm wary about sequels to these sort of martial arts movies.

I'm hoping they keep making Dredd movies alongside. Eventually in The Raid XVII/Dredd XVII, they'll all be in the same building fighting each other.

Doesn't surprise me. My buddy and I went to the midnight release and we were the only two there.

Whatever happened to that US remake of The Raid that Screen Gems was going to make?

I hope they leave it alone. And if not then they could take over the Dredd franchise if Lionsgate doesn't go forward with a sequel.

....I'd see that. No lie. By that point though...all those Indonesian fucks will just be Meat bags for Dredd though. Not that I mind. Dredd can shoot as many Indonesians as he wants, I ain't going to cry about them.

Posted by Gareth Evans today, a production shot during a "prison riot" scene:

Clearly a rip-off of Dredd 2: A Dredd to Dredd Dreddier.

The first film's had a number of airings on the various Starz channels and I hope it gets to find a bigger audience that way...Despite being awfully dubbed.

Re: The Raid 2 (2014)

I wish Evans would get a shot at The Expendables 3 or Die Hard 6. Ordinarily, I wouldn't ever hope that an interesting foreign filmmaker would be making Hollywood franchise stuff, but in this case, I think he'd be able to give them a proper punch.

It's in the Redbox where I work, though as I found out when I tried to rent it, the Redbox version is just the film and nothing else, and the version I got from my local library apparently has some of the extra features, but not the damn original score, apparently that's exclusive to the Blu-Ray.

I've actually been trying to convince a subtitle-phobic friend of mine to watch the film, with little success. You could really understand it pretty well even without subtitles, it's not like the plot is that complicated.

Dredd: The Dredded Boogaloo, you mean?

Like I said, I tired to convince a subtitle-phobic friend of mine to see it. It really doesn't matter if you see it subtitled or not, it's not like the plot is difficult to figure out. If anything, hopefully it'll knock down preconceptions that foreign films are "boring," black-and-white art films.

I missed this comment, but The Raid was on Starz last night, and it was subtitled.

Was pleasantly surprised by the original. Excited for the sequel -- hopefully it's done right.
