Comic book hero Judge Dredd 'might be gay'


The writers of the legendary lawman Judge Dredd have caused a stir among fans by suggesting he might be gay.

The latest edition of the comic 2000 AD is titled Closet and deals with the issue of a teenager coming out.

The first page has been released on the internet and apparently shows Dredd - a judge/policeman form the future - kissing the youth in a gay club.

Reaction to the teaser, which was released online last month, has been mixed, with some fans so hostile to the idea they have threatened to burn the comic.

A spokesman said: "We have had quite an extreme reaction.

"Dredd has always been satirical, while touching on serious issues. This is another example of this."

There is a twist in the tale, with all not being as it seems, the spokesman said.

Writer Rob Williams said Dredd's sexuality - whatever it is - was buried beneath his love for the law.

He said: "Although, can you imagine what would happen if that repression ever fell away, just for an instant? Sure, Dredd could be gay.




I'm all for so-called fairness and equal opportunity but some of this PC is getting out-of-hand. Why not make Dredd black, a champion of Climate Change and Anti-gun while you're at it.

You're right since this is from the super serious Judge Dredd comic, I'm sure it should all be taken at face value.

Isn't Judge Dredd asexual?

I don't recall the title of the story,but one Dredd tale is about a male Judge that was in love with a female judge.The woman ends up getting killed and her partner is so over come with grief and rage that he swears revenge.
Before he can kill the perp that ended his partners life,Dredd shoots and kills him.
The perp is surprised by this and says "You shot him to save me".Dredd replies that their can be no love in a Judges life,other than the law.
So..I doubt that Dredd ever has sexual thoughts or desires,simply because he chooses not to.
Just my 2 cents.

But...he was black for some issues in the 70's.

For many years, when Dredd was published in B&W, he was drawn in a way so that his ethnicity was not definitive. It was only when he was published in color that they chose to make him white.

And if he were gay, who cares? His life is defined by the law.

Is the issue out yet? Because if it's just the opening, isn't it possible that it's just a dream or whatever?

Yup. It doesn't matter what kind of sexuality Dredd is sublimating in his devotion to the Law. Unless he sticks a little rainbow sticker on his bike (which I'm sure would be a violation of some kind), how would anyone be able to tell if he is a repressed homosexual vs. a repressed heterosexual?

Publicity stunt to sell more copies. Lame.
