^ I don't know if it's just me, but the trailer isn't showing up.
Here's another version in case anyone else can't see that one.

Amazing cast, riveting trailer, could have an element of The Pledge to it, but I don't know how much the latter part of the movie focuses on Gyllenhaal's character.

I saw an ad for this the other day, thought it looked entertaining if a bit generic. The full trailer reminds me of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance for some reason. Apparently this screened at Telluride the other day and won rave reviews.
Variety Review: http://variety.com/2013/film/reviews...de-1200593140/
"A spellbinding, sensationally effective thriller with a complex moral center that marks a grand-slam English-lingo debut for the gifted Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve. "
Hollywood Reporter: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/mov.../review/618578
"A difficult subject is bolstered by outstanding performances and masterly filmmaking."
Indiewire:
http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplayli...nhaal-20130830
"A first-rate thriller with a blackened bite, “Prisoners” may not be the easiest or most escapist sit for the casual moviegoer, but it’s this kind of filmmaking and storytelling that brings folks like us flocking to the theaters year after year."

I'll check it out mainly because of Villeneuve. He's become one of the better directors working today with films like Maelstrom, Polytechnique and Incendies.

Despite the cast, the trailers make it look like shit. In fact, it reminds me of The Tortured and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends in much the same way.

Never heard of the director but in reading some of the some synopsis on those films you mentioned, makes me want to take a look before I watch Prisoners.

Surprised people are saying the previews make it look bad. I saw a trailer for it in front of a film a while ago and immediately wanted to see it. Looks great to me and the cast is damn good.

"Polytechnique" is also excellent. It chronicles the mass shooting which occurred at Ecole (school) Polytechnique in Montreal in December 1989 through the eyes of two students who witnessed a gunman murder fourteen young women.
Not a big fan of "Maelstrom" but for a first film, it certainly showed promise.

Funny thing about "Prisoners". There's a conspiracy nitwit on another forum who started a thread about the New World Order backing a film to make fun of Alex Jones. I usually pay no attention to him, but since he mentioned a film, I was curious. Turns out the villain played by Paul Dano is named "Alex Jones" and surely that could not be a coincidence.
Even funnier, in order to backup his claim that this was indeed a conspiracy, he pointed to this article as solid proof:

The fact that the article obviously makes fun of Alex Jones and uses this film to demonstrate how easy it is to come up with a conspiracy theory completely escaped him.

Getting alot of praise and acclaim. 85% on RT and 71 on Metacritic. Statements like "best thriller since Se7en" and "Jackman is the frontrunner for Best Actor" getting thrown around.
I'll be seeing this sometime over the weekend.

In the Village Voice, Amy Nicholson gives it a negative review:

Here's the first paragraph:
http://www.villagevoice.com/2013-09-...age+Voice+Film)
Here's the first paragraph:
If five Oscar nominees lose two young girls in the woods, will their wailing make a sound? That's the key question of Prisoners, Denis Villeneuve's prestigious puffery about a father (Hugh Jackman) and a cop (Jake Gyllenhaal) trying to catch a kidnapper. Prisoners is a dog-whistle for Academy voters keyed to a pitch that screams, "For the love of God, nominate me for something!" It might work, except that a) it makes no sense, and b) it's not from Clint Eastwood, the only director with enough swagger to demand such schlock be taken seriously.

I always think it's funny, he will find a movie with a 97% and post the one negative review. Unless it's Pokemon or Miyazaki, then it's a positive one.

Is it not worth getting other viewpoints?
FWIW, this looks like substandard Ron Howard fare from the ads. And WB doesn't seem to have much faith in it, either.
