So, Amazing Spider-man #700, eh?

Editing to preface my preface!! I hadn't read the Marvel thread that seems to already deal with this whole mess. But, maybe my request at the bottom of the post is still kinda relevant?

Allow me to preface this by saying I was a long-time Spidey fan and collector; at one point having two copies of Amazing Spider-man #1, and every issue following until I stopped collecting in 2008 (had to sell my precious Number Ones due to financial problems but still have 4-570). Through Spidey's history, there have been ups and downs and major character deaths and clone sagas, but it had always been an interesting and fun story to follow. Until that One More Day crap. I still resent that entire concept. But that's not what this thread is about.

When major events happen in comic books, it draws the attention of the media. And issue 700 of Amazing Spider-man seems to be one of those cases. Spoilerizing for those who might need it:

Spoiler:
Apparently, Peter dies and Doc Ock takes over as the new Spidey.

Killing off a lead character isn't new (Superman, Captain America, Johnny Storm (is he still dead??)), but this seems a bit extreme in the Spidey storyline. I mean, I don't know the events that lead up to this, and maybe it all makes sense in the book.

Which brings me to my question, or request: Can anyone toss out a short-ish synopsis of what's been going on since Parker became unmarried? Is Aunt May still alive??

Yes. Aunt May is still alive thanks to Peter Parker selling his soul to the devil who took his marriage (and future child) as the price. Marvel has backtracked on all that now due to fan outrage by saying it wasn't Peter who made the deal with Mephisto but Mary Jane. Then backtracked again by having Mary Jane "trick" Mephisto so the deal never happened in the first place - Tho the ramifications still happened (no marriage, Aunt May alive, everyone forgot Peter was Spidey).

I read it to see what the hubbub was all about. It was almost unreadably bad. But I did enjoy the Lou Mongello shout-out.
