Thank you for posting this incredible deal!
Stuart Galbraith's laudatory review here at DVD TALK made this set a must buy. I saved the tax and more money, more than four bucks, by buying it USED-VERY GOOD from a highly rated Marketplace seller. I'm not real fussy about case scuffs, but I will examine each disc. I just HATE paying that Amazon tax!

I could have sworn I bought it last year at this time for a dollar more ($35.99), but turns out it was at J&R Music, not Amazon

Have you been living under a rock for the last few years? Amazon collects tax from several states now, including New York and California.

Greedy asshole politicians took umbrage at the fact that we were escaping our government mandated fuckings when we purchase at Amazon so they changed laws in some states to mandate that Amazon collect sales tax under the guise of mainstreet fairness to local b&m retailers. Not that ANYBODY buys that bullshit.

A lot of states have passed the tax law and the deal is simply if the online vendor has a physical presense in your state, you get charged tax. Amazon has warehouses all over the country, therefore a bunch of states get hosed.
Also very thankful to the OP. Was never seriously considering this set but at that price I couldn't pass it up.

Unfortunately, amazon has moved away from being the bargain leader to trying to be the convenience leader, and wants to offer things such as same day delivery, so more states will probably have warehouses soon. Raise prices and justify it by claiming more convenience. My shopping habits have already shifted to other retailers over the past year, usually only buying amazon DotDs and such. There are few times that you really need 2 day shipping, and it doesn't help that my on-trac prime delivery guy likes to throw every package on to my porch instead of carry it there.

I also have cut back buying at Amazon, not just because of the tax, but also for everything MGDEALS correctly stated. Now I study the marketplace sellers more and for some items I ship to my brother in Illinois and then carry them with me when I return home from my biannual visits there. I wouldn't mind the tax so much if I thought it was really going to benefit the state, but it seems to instead be a sweetheart deal Amazon cut for themselves.
Anyway, sorry to go OT. Any word on the US release of L & H's silent films?

I haven't noticed any change from Amazon in terms of prices over the last several years. On single
DVDs, their prices rarely get to the $5 range as some other websites do, so its not that good for that, but for other items, I find its usually the best place to shop.
As for taxes, to the extent Amazon is collecting taxes, it has to remit them. The only area Amazon might get a sweetheart deal is on other state taxes where the state government has decided to let Amazon skip it in exchange for Amazon. I really don't get people complaining about online retailers collecting taxes. To my knowledge, every state that has a sales tax also has a use tax. Typically, when you file your state tax returns, the forms as you what amount of use tax you owe. The amount is equal to the goods purchased out of state on which you paid no or "insufficient" tax Unless, you live in a state without a sales tax (Delaware?), you are going to owe tax on your purchases whether Amazon collects it or not.

Re: Amazon 12/1 DOTD - Laurel & Hardy: The Essential Collection $34.99
More and more states are going to be collecting sales tax for Amazon and a couple have arranged special terms so that for a while Amazon gets to keep a fair chunk of it in exchange for building warehouse facilities in that state (NJ is an example).
"On May 30, Mr. Christie announced that the online retailer wouldn't charge the state's 7% sales tax until July 2013 in exchange for bringing an estimated 1,500 full-time jobs to New Jersey, as well as "thousands" of seasonal, part-time and construction jobs. Amazon received some standard economic-development tax incentives as well."
And yes, under the fair use laws, the state taxes should have been paid on out-of-state internet purchases when your income tax is filed.
