Is AMC TV (Walking Dead) allowed for public viewing at a bar?

Can an establishment do this without any special permission?

I know several bars in my area do it. My guess is it's fine, since sports bars base their whole business around it.

No. However, if you send me $1000 I will PM you the distribution rights certificate.

In the meantime, all the hot, loose women will talk amongst themselves at the other end of the bar.

It has more to do with commercial cable/satellite packages. Supposedly you can't broadcast *any* residential package in a commercial environment. If you've bought a bar/tavern package, you can presumably show whatever channel, premium or otherwise, you want.

Bars pay a small fortune for the DirecTV NFL package. I think part of that deal is a commercial license for any channel they carry.

We have an indie film/bar out in Phoenix that shows it every Sunday and advertises it online. I would think they would have heard from someone after a season and a half.

Bars probably make that back over a couple games. Obviously I haven't been to every bar, but anytime I've watched a game at a bar it was very crowded and the bar made bank.

Yeah, that cost isn't really bad, and knowing DirecTV there are probably other things in play around the cost. The main point is, though, that there is a charge for that.

No kidding. You don't need sound for sports, but The Walking Dead? Uh... might want to be able to hear what they're saying, haha!

I'm thinking the all-you-can-eat spaghetti buffet wasn't a good promotional tie-in ...

Yep - that really isn't a lot. I used to regularly go to sports bars on Sunday since I didn't have ST at the time and I'd end up paying at least $50 on drinks/food over the course of a whole afternoon.

Casinos in Vegas likely foot the highest bill (in addition to the sportsbook, some casinos have big screens in their showrooms/theater), and they easily make that back between booze sales and their gambling handle.

Even if you are not allowed to do this I hope the person that reports them gets beaten up by drunks.

This is the correct answer. I have Direct TV at my shop. AMC is included. And it's still just $75-or-so per month (after taxes and whatnot).

I'm not sure how much the Fox Sportsnet or those ESPN packages cost. I could see those being expensive, as the programmer is paying to cover pretty-much every single game, regardless of how many people are watching.

We have a burger place in town called Zombie Burger. They have Walking Dead viewing specials every Sunday night. It's pretty cool.

My local theater shows it every Sunday. They do the same with Mad Men and (I think, still) Glee, and used to do it with LOST.

My local theater had been doing it, sponsored by a local comic chain. AMC just sent a cease and desist, but lets other theaters in the area continue doing it. My only thought was the one theater had hundreds of people coming and AMC saw it as lost revenue.
