I liked the episode. It established that the Ponds don't have to choose between regular life and Doctor life, that the Doctor is a part of their life, not an addition to it. Of course, this means next week is going to be uber-tragic.

It was pretty cool idea for an episode. Nice visuals, especially the ship and the cubes.

As usual under the new production team and Doctor, it fell totally flat for me in the finished product. Just 'meh'.

I always wind up thinking 'I bet Tennant and crew would have knocked this out of the park.'

Odd episode. Liked Rory's dad coming back and the introduction of Kate. However, parts of the episode just seemed a bit off...

I liked this episode. Nice tribute to the Third Doctor's adventures.

Brian Williams should be a full time companion (Rory's dad or the newscaster -- either one).

Re: Doctor Who S07E04: "The Power of the Three" (09-22-12)

Was this the calm before the storm? I'm glad they gave us a little extra chance to reflect on and appreciate Amy & Rory. I'm a sucker for the personal moments. "Your face was the first that this face saw." Nice.

I've been watching lots of "Wonders of the Solar System/Universe" lately, so the Prof. Brian Cox cameo was a surprise and great fun. The invasion story was only so-so itself, but I really was more focused on dialog & character this time around.

Loved the moment where the Doctor had to admit to Rory's dad that his companions sometimes die. Makes me good & nervous about what's coming up next, like I should be.

I liked it, even if the ending was anticlimactic. Probably my favorite moment was seeing Prof. Brian Cox.

I quite like the new Lethbridge-Stewart. I hope they use her as a recurring character. And UNIT in general. But then I'm a Pertwee fan through and through.

Re: Doctor Who S07E04: "The Power of the Three" (09-22-12)

I can't decide how I feel about The Power of Three. It was an interesting story, and I LOVED the nod to old Who, but overall it just felt like a filler episode.

During the sitdown discussion between the Doctor and Amy, I got the feeling that during his "extended" time away without them he's been traveling with other companions. This latest length was "about 10 years".

No, Amy said she's been traveling with him off and on for 10 of her years, not that he's been away for 10 years.

Ok thanks for clarifying that. That's what I get for just giving thoughts after watching it once with my son talking so I miss things.

Has anyone else noticed that the opening titles are getting darker each week? I get the feeling that the vortex clouds next week will be almost black (perhaps because of Amy and Rory's fate).

It seemed to have a very dream-like quality to it.

They're putting an excessive amount of filters on the opening titles. Hope they drop that soon.

Sadly, I no longer have BBCA so I have to wait 'til the entire season is released on BD.

How did Piper, Pru/Paige, and Phoebe fit into this episode?

I think that "A Town Called Mercy" actually occurred within this episode. In ATCM the Doctor references Rory leaving a cell phone charger at King Henry VIII's, and this episode showed them there during that 7 weeks of traveling they did. ATCM must have happened later within that time frame.

Ohh, that's an interesting point. Are they wearing their Town Called Mercy clothes when they return to the party?

Didn't they get rid of the Sonic screwdriver at one point on the old Doctor Who show because they used it to often to get out of messes?
They used for this episode as an easy way out.

Yeah, it was one of the Peter Davison episodes... the one with the big fish people... Tereleptils or something like that. The sonic screwdriver didn't reappear until either the 1996 Fox Network movie or the relaunch.

Kind of horrified me when I was a kid after he didn't get it back.

They didn't just use it this episode for an easy way, they use it almost every episode as an easy way out. They may as well call it a magic wand. There was even one episode where one of the settings could repair barbed wire.

If they got rid of the screwdriver then the writers would have to get a little cleverer, but that would also mean they would not be able to sell as much sonic screwdriver merchandise.

I know when I am out and about and run into problem my trusty phillips head screwdriver always fixes everything. It can even screw and unscrew screws.

There's also a strange shock that flashes on the screen when the tardis gets struck.

As for the timey whimey of Henry VIII's phone charging thing... I'm guessing that the time lines are in the opposite direction. The Doctor in the episode is moving backwards and seeing the Ponds POST what happens in the next episode, knowing their fate already on a farewell tour.

Does explain the way he said he missed Amy. Even goes so far to say he's running to them before they fade from him.

So far this season the reoccurring words/themes have been lights flickering, eggs and remembering. Angels cause lights flickering.

Clever set up, too bad they couldn't figure out an effective storyline for it. I'm not looking forward to the next episode. I'm not liking the fate for most of his companions. If he was truly a good and caring Doctor, he'd stop having companions. Maybe they should keep his next partner a Dalek.

Re: Doctor Who S07E04: "The Power of the Three" (09-22-12)

Is there no element of choice? Some companions come to bad ends, others don't. People do potentially dangerous things all the time of their own free will.

I'll tell you this, if the Doctor were real, and he asked me to be a companion, I'd do it in a heartbeat, even knowing the fate of many of his other companions.
