What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

This is one of those well known movies of all time. I used to love it in the mid 00s, then forgot labout it, then revisited again watching it ad nauseum in my latter teens, it was like some sort of holy bible on what it means to be a MAN! Then and now it looks kind of jokey, except as an amalgam of some forgotten epic 80s that might not have existed but maybe in a twilight zone. In that regard it is good. However Tony is despicable, and is probably NOT cool as i thought him to be now that i'm older/wiser, etc (thought i wish i was in a dumber state to enjoy it).

Watched it because it is referenced so much. Meh. Tony wasn't likeable at all. Probably won't ever watch it again.

But the women in this country when you do that, they know, they understand, they go crazy. It's gonna take a lot of practice but you gotta learn because women love when you flop the pussy.

I'm not a big Scarface guy, but I do love a lot of his films. Not a huge fan of his recent output... but hey I like The Fury, so what the fuck do I know?

He's the third best filmmaker at this table.

This is my biggest problem with Scarface - most of the people who enjoy it are idiots who don't understand Tony is scum and you aren't supposed to root for him.

I'd also add that most of the De Palma films I've seen have looked like warmed over TV movies. For whatever reason he doesn't create visually impressive movies.

I like it but don't love it. The final shoot out is one for the ages though. I prefer the original Scarface.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

SCARFACE holds a special place in my heart because I saw it on 42nd Street, Manhattan's famed "Deuce," before they cleaned it up. Ahh, the good ol' days.

Tony Montana's a hungry guy who has no restraints. Someone like that can only go so far in the criminal world before someone whacks him. In the film, though, he has a late crisis of conscience, which I found interesting and compelling. I wish more had been made of it. And I wish the final sequence had been longer and more dramatic. It ends a little too quickly.

But, unfortunately, the film influenced and inspired a lot of criminals and aspiring drug dealers. Especially in their choice of weapons. This was not a good thing. If there's an afterlife, De Palma and Oliver Stone (the screenwriter) will have to answer for that. (As will all the idiots who thought they could become Tony Montana.)

I like it a lot. It runs on energy and self destruction instead of plot and I always love those kinds films. I think it lives up to hype and is one of the better "gangster" flicks.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

I really really enjoy Scarface. Just like the style, look, everything about it. It's not an amazing movie like some of the minority youth of my age make it out to be but I really enjoy it. It's entertaining. Very much a piece of it's decade.

I don't think we're supposed to like Tony. If we are, I didn't feel it. It's just watching a guy rise from the bottom to only go to the top of his excess and then come gloriously crashing down to his end. It's a very cool flick..that's all it is.

I've always wondered...wtf is up w/ that guy in the costume and mask dancing in the nightclub before Tony gets shot and has to kill Frank? That part always makes me confused. Like...what's so cool about that? Was that like an 80s thing that I just don't know about or was that guy known for his shtick or what?

Bingo! I don't get why a character has to be likable to enjoy a movie. If the character is intriguing, I don't give a fuck. Good, bad, just be interesting.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

The guy is scum. He may have a respectable standard w/ his "no women, no kids" but beyond that? Ain't nothing to like about him as a person. Also...that's his fall. The guy would do everything else...but when it came to that..he couldn't do it. And in that business? No way...you've got to take down whatever that needs to go down in anyway possible. He was his own demise for being a dumb fuck about it. The guy had it coming, end of story. It was done very well thankfully.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

People are deluding themselves if they haven't realized some viewers have idolized Tony Montana and tried to ape his persona. It's depressing and is a case of the negative impact of art on the real world. There are examples of positive influence such as Schindler's List and there are examples of negative influence such as Scarface.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

I prefer the 1932 original, which was loosely based on Al Capone. I do think it's interesting to compare the 1932 original to the 1983 updated remake because they share some plot points, but I think the remake is too over the top and too cheesy to take very seriously. Yeah, it's fun to watch, but I don't think it's a very good gangster film at all (although it did somehow end up in the 10th spot on AFI's Top 10 Gangster Films List ).

Scarface is a good flick. Ruthless and brutal. Entertaining and intense.

I love the camerawork and music. The Miami apartment scene was grisley and brutal. Watching Tony make bad decisions . It's one of those movies that, no matter how many times I watch it, I wish that I'd see something different happen to the characters.

Pfft, Scarface is still better than Schindler's List.

Cool to know. Do you remember which theater you saw it in?

100% agree. I've heard the complaints around here that someone didn't like a movie because the lead character wasn't likable. I've never understood that.

I do not agree, IMO DePalma is really good at framing images and getting the best out of the cinematography.
His use of split screen, strange camera angles and panning is excellent.

Re: What do you this think of Scarface (1983)

One thing that I read in the movie reviews back in (1983) was that Tony had desires for his sister.
All the times I have rewatched this movie I never see it.
I just see a older brother just protecting his little sister.
He never kisses her on the mouth or grabs her ass.
