Go On (Matthew Perry) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 8/08/12 (11:04pm)

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Synopsis:

Misery loves company. Unless you're sportscaster Ryan King (Matthew Perry, "Friends," "Mr. Sunshine") who thinks misery should just be left alone. After taking some time off, Ryan - who recently lost his wife in a car accident - is now ready to get back to work. And while he seems like his same old charming, cocky self, his boss won't set him back on the air until he seeks counseling. So, Ryan reluctantly joins a support group with one goal in mind: get in, get out and get back on the radio as quickly as possible. Played by the fast-talking, sarcastic, and charismatic Perry, Ryan gives grief a real run for its money. Within one day of group therapy, he hijacks the meeting and suddenly the downtrodden are cajoled into playing a game of "who's got the best sob story?" And in no time all of them are battling it out, trying to one-up each other's despair. Now, this is fun! Ryan's total lack of interest in healing might be just what this group needs - and maybe, exactly what he needs to move on with his life. Also starring are Tony winner Laura Benanti ("The Playboy Club"), Julie White ("Transformers"), Suzy Nakamura ("Dodgeball"), Khary Payton ("General Hospital") and Allison Miller ("Terra Nova"). From the Emmy-winning writer and executive producer Scott Silveri ("Perfect Couples," "Friends") comes a new series that proves grief can be good. Todd Holland ("Malcolm in the Middle") and Karey Burke ("Free Agents," "Miss/Guided") also serve as executive producers. The pilot was directed by Holland. "Go On" is a production of Universal Television, Dark Toy Entertainment and Silver & Gold Productions.
The 1st Fall Premiere starts tonight at 11:04pm!!

13 episodes ordered (for now)

In case you need to be up early and can't watch and don't have a DVR, this will re-air September 10th.

Didn't realize this was cutting into olympic programming. i'm surprised they'd do that.

Even with the late airing, I think it's a good choice to use the Olympics as a lead-in. The Olympics are averaging close to 30M viewers and almost 10 in the demos per night in primetime. If Go On can get even 10-12M eyes to watch it that late, it's a good launch.

Looking forward to it. Then again I enjoyed Studio 60 and Mr. Sunshine as well so...apparently I have a thing for Perry.

How did you see it? I heard nothing about it being pirated and leaked. And I know it's not on Hulu or NBC.com since this is supposed to be a special preview.

FYI

Directv says this premieres at 11:06pm and ends at 11:30pm. That's only 24 minutes. Aren't most sitcoms 21-22 minutes with no commercials?

Aint it Cool News, LA Times, Boston Globe, and Variety all liked this, which I found surprising because I didn't think the previews made it look that good. I'm going to give it a try though, just because I like Matthew Perry.

Meh. Didn't hate it, but it didn't do much for me, either. And, for reasons I can't explain, I actually like Matthew Perry...

All the reviewers should be old enough to remember Dear John and mention that one as well since the series liberally uses the plot of that show as well.

I like Matthew Perry okay, and will probably catch this when it's aired again.

HOWEVER, that promo pic of a goofy group hug with one sourpuss in the middle makes me want to kill something.

This. First thing that struck me. Of course we know that the marketing department has nothing to do with the writing of the show. Although, that would explain a lot of other shows terrible writing.

I may be going crazy but wasn't this show called something else when it was first announced?

Re: Go On (Matthew Perry) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 8/08/12 (11:04pm)

For anyone who cares. 16.1M viewers and 5.6 in the demos for last night's ratings. Extremely inflated numbers.

Will be lucky to keep 1/4 of that audience when it airs again in September.

I liked it enough to give it a chance in the fall. Glad to see Chris Rock Jr. working again.

I wonder if this is NBC's attempt to get Community "right." Guess they replaced the middle eastern guy with a Hispanic woman in this one. Nice...

Nope. It's been known as Go On from day 1. It does seem like a temp name that just stuck.

A middling effort. Not horrible nor was it all that great. I didnt think the sappy "heartwarming" elements worked at all. As soon as they revealed that the kid "never talks to anyone" we knew exactly where this was going.

It took you THAT long to see where this was going?
