Saturday Night Live Cast Changes - Season 38

Obviously Kristen Wiig and Andy Samberg have already announced their departures. Jason Sudekis is rumored to be on his way out at some point in the next season. As if that wasn't going to leave enough of a hole, lead writer and Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers is the leading candidate to replace Regis on Live... This is looking to be one of the biggest offseason talent drains SNL has seen in two decades.

If Meyers exits, I'd love to see John Mulaney step up as head writer / Weekend Update anchor.

This.

How can we get Lorne booted off again? Is there a Danny and Matt waiting in the wings somewhere who can make the show great again?

I'll miss Wiig and (if it happens) Sudekis, but won't miss Samberg at all. I read somewhere that Meyers has a hand in writing a big chunk of the skits (whether he's in them or not), so he'd be a loss.

Thank goodness.

I suppose that tends to happen when you're the Head Writer.

I hadn't heard about Myers possibly replacing Regis, that doesn't seem like a good fit to me.

No surprise that Sudeikis is on his way out. His movie career has been blossoming the last two years or so.

I can picture how man improv stage actors and no-name standup comedians are sending in their demos to Lorne Michaels. SNL is the big time.

This is why I hate Lorne Michaels as he's anti-improv and wants his cast to stick to whatever the writers put out. His way of doing comedy is old and it clearly shows considering how much shit one has to sift through during a normal episode. The digital shorts brought hope and life into the show based upon The Lonely Island's anarchic sense of humor, but with those three gone, I have little-to-no hope for the show based upon its remaining cast.

If Sudeikis bails, Hader needs to follow suit and let the show hopefully sink like the Titanic once and for all.

Keenan is probably the best of what's left. As unlikely as it would have seemed a few years ago, I think he and Armison will be the bridge between this past cycle and the cycle to come. I do like a lot of the talent they brought on board in the past few years. Lorne's biggest misstep of late may have been firing Watkins/Wilson and hiring Slate at all.

Have you seen the show lately? The writing is awful. Losing Meyers would be a good thing.

Jenny Slate left a long time ago.

I will miss Meyers and hope Strahan gets that job with Kelly since he is a better fit and more outgoing and could bring a new audience and demographic to that show.

Armisen and Hader should do the Weekend Update with 2 dudes lol.

So has WU become the default head writer position? Granted the only other head writer that I actually knew the name of was Fey.

Samberg's digital shorts were the best part of SNL for the last few years and I actually liked Seth for WU most times.

My point was that they should have never hired Slate at all. That offseason Lorne essentially traded out Watkins and Wilson for Padrad and Slate.

They would be stupid to pick Strahan. I'm a big football fan and the best part of the FOX pregame is the 55 minutes that his mouth is shut. Of course if they want the most annoying show on television, they'll pick him to pair with the most annoying woman.

My thoughts exactly. The show desperately needs a refresh of writers and especially a new head writer.

Granted it's not as good as it was in the 70s and 80s, but it's world's better than it was in the 90s and early 2000s. I mean a decade ago this show was so bad they were actually talking about CANCELLING it.

Re: Saturday Night Live Cast Changes - Season 38

In the minority here but I thought SNL was at its peak from 2001-2008 with Fey, Fallon, Poehler, Rudolph, Forte, Armisen, Hader, etc

Not as great as the early 90's cast with Carvey, Hartman, Sandler, Farley etc but still decent.

When Poehler left at the end of 2008 the show went downhill.

Adam McKay was the head writer before Tina Fey, and he hardly ever appeared on screen. After leaving, he's written and produced a lot of Will Ferrell's movies, as well as co-founding Funny or Die.

Re: Saturday Night Live Cast Changes - Season 38

Quite a few people say they miss Fey and Poehler, but while they were on the show they got as much hate as Wiig does now. The reality is the show hasn't been consistently funny in years. Sure, there are a few great skits every year, but they are few and far between. The major problem this show has is that when they do introduce a great skit/character that gets a great reaction, they repeat it over and over untill it's boring. The only exception to the rule being Stephan...IMO he never gets old.
