NBA 2K13 -- October 2, 2012
From 2K's Facebook page
2K Sports today announced that the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant, Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin and the Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose have been crowned the cover athletes for NBA® 2K13, the next installment of the top-selling and top-rated NBA video game simulation franchise*.
”Being crowned as one of the NBA 2K13 cover athletes is a huge honor and something I always dreamt about,” said Durant, who won his third straight scoring title and led the Thunder franchise to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1996. “It’s definitely humbling to grace the cover after the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird.”
“There’s so much young talent around the NBA, so it’s very exciting to be chosen for NBA 2K’s ‘New Dynasty’ alongside Kevin and Derrick,” added Griffin, who helped lead the Clippers to their first postseason since 2006. “The NBA 2K series has always been my first choice when I want to get a game in.”
“It’s a dream come true to be one of the cover athletes for NBA 2K13,” commented Rose, the 2010-11 NBA Most Valuable Player, who led the Bulls to a league-best 50-16 record this season. “I’ve worked closely with 2K Sports since NBA 2K10, and I’m honored to follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan as the latest Chicago Bull to be featured on the cover.”
In their young but impressive careers, Rose, Durant and Griffin have each taken the NBA by storm. All three are past winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and have also amassed eight All-Star berths, three scoring titles, and one Most Valuable Player award between them.
“There are many young superstars in today’s NBA, but we’ve selected three incredible athletes for the cover of NBA 2K13 that represent the NBA well,” concluded Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “It’s clear to us that Blake, Derrick and Kevin are the most deserving guys to inherit the NBA 2K cover from Jordan, Magic and Bird.”
Developed by Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio, NBA 2K13 is not yet rated by the ESRB and will be available on October 2, 2012 in North America and October 5, 2012 internationally. The Wii U version of the title will be available during the holiday season. Fans are encouraged to pre-order now at participating retailers in order to receive the downloadable NBA All-Star content package presented by Sprite on day one at no extra cost.

So I guess they are abadoning the whole legends thing. Hrmmm...hoping they change the MyPlayer thing this year, that's been the one feature I've absolutely cringed to try out the last couple of years. Mostly, the awkard controls with the analog sticks. Its a great idea, painful execution (though I know some absolutely love it).

I skipped last year, but will probably buy this year. I didn't have any major issues with My Player back in 2k11 and really loved it.

Definitely not a good move to abandon the Legends concept...that added a whole new aspect to the game in recent years.

Probably cost a bunch of extra money though... but it probably helped them to focus on the Legends last year during the lockout. I love the game, but I'm content playing last year's version until the inevitable price drop.

I'm keeping my 2k11 for the Jordan feature and 2k12 for the Legends feature. I know when a new game gets released, people tend to sell/trade it in, but I think those 2 features still add replay value to otherwise dated games.

I agree with that. I have no desire to trade in my copies either, that and for 2k12, I still haven't finished a season with it. So I be a bit behind but I do have until October to finish it I guess.

Are they making a Vita version? I'd be in for that.

I like the addition of the All-Star weekend skills competition, especially with the old school slammers and 3-point shooters. Didn't previous 2K additions have the skills competitions? I could have sworn seeing the 3 point shootout before, but I think the dunk contest is new right?
I hope there isn't some convoluted button pattern you need to memorize to do it. I think Live and some other games tried including the skills competitions and it got really convoluted trying to remember what buttons to press.

They've had some form of dunk contests before; did they remove it in last year's version? I remember doing dunks was always ridiculously hard so I never bothered. It was just never really all-star weekend themed though.

Nope. They added Horse via the Legends Showcase DLC though. I think this is going to be the first year I don't buy the game on release since 2K9. If they improve the online, I might buy it if there is a decent Black Friday deal.

This is a pretty shitty review without much depth, but IGN gave it a 9.1.

I read that as well, if that is not true that's a bit disappointing since that was kinda a selling point I thought. Unlike NBA2k11 and 12, I'm not sure I'm looking forward to anything this year .

Why do you think that's not available? The dream team is in the game so it should be possible in a quick match.

Yeah I don't know where Popcorn is getting this assumption. I saw them plugging that aspect of the game on several posters/articles.

Just played a game between 1992 Dream Team vs 2012 Team USA.
Really fun game and went down to the wire. I won 70-68 playing as the Dream Team on a last second jumper by MJ.
