Curse of Chucky (dir. Mancini, Dourif returns, 2013)

From Shock Till You Drop:

We haven't seen the last of Chucky. Not by a long shot. Sure, there's that long-mooted Child's Play remake that we hear about from time to time. But that's apparently all occuring within the halls of MGM.

Meanwhile, Universal - the studio that gave us Child's Play 2 through Seed of Chucky - is going to keep the piece of the franchise it has going with Curse of Chucky, reportedly filming this September.

Moviehole says Don Mancini, series creator and writer, will be at the helm of this next installment for Universal Home Entertainment. Mancini last directed Seed of Chucky.

The site says this direct-to-DVD entry has "Chucky arrive to wreck havoc within a family that’s regrouped for a funeral. In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother. When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier."

Brad Dourif is back to voice Chucky. More on this project as it develops!

************************************************

I thought Bride was midly amusing, but mostly bad. I never saw Seed because it looked terrible.

This sounds like it will be equally as bad.

I'd be interested in seeing a remake of the original, provided they actually stick with the tone of that film and try to make it scary... but yeah, Bride was meh, and Seed was one of the most god awful things I had ever seen. This is going to blow.

Child's Play was one of those franchises I never really understood the appeal of I guess. The first one is the only one that's semi decent but even still it's not that great.

The first Child's Play holds up quite well. I watched it again about a year or so ago and was surprised by just how creepy it is.

None of the sequels held that tone, although fans of bad '90s slasher movies (like myself) can find some merit in 2 and 3.

This latest installment sounds like Death at a Funeral with Chucky throw in the mix.

You've never seen the appeal of "Toy Story gone wrong?"

I suppose in ways I do get the appeal. I think more than anything the sequels are what turned me off to the franchise (particularly Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky). I do enjoy cheesy horror from time to time though.

Still love the first film.

I didn't see Bride or Seed, so I'm a little scared to see this

I really enjoyed the first 3. Bride and Seed? Not so much. I'm sure I'll still wind up seeing this anyway.

Bride amused me. But the less said about Seed the better. I'll probably still check out Curse.

I'd love a remake with Dourif that retains the tone of the original.

I enjoyed Bride for what it was. It wasn't scary, but I enjoyed the tounge in cheek nature. At that point, it was impossible for him to be scary anymore anyway (at least to me). Seed took the formula from Bride and drove it into the ground. No interest in this.

I like them all except the 3rd one. Was excited about this until I read direct to DVD. I would love to see Chucky at the shows again.

re: Curse of Chucky (dir. Mancini, Dourif returns, 2013)

I love Chucky and the first two, along with Bride, are great fun. I love to revisit them. 3 is a turd and Seed of Chucky was one of the most disappointing movie experiences (right up there with Spider-Man 3) I can recall from the last 10 years. I was really looking forward to a 'play it straight' remake, but I guess if this is the best we can get, I'll take it....but Mancini sucks behind the camera.

There's only 1 person/thing that can play Chucky.

re: Curse of Chucky (dir. Mancini, Dourif returns, 2013)

That synopsis sounds like they are *possibly* stepping away from the uber-campy schtick of the last two films, which would be a good thing... Seed wasn't fun-bad, it was just 'hard to watch'-bad. But the funeral story just doesn't excite me. My fear is either: 1. We'll be subjected to a bunch of grief melodrama, or 2: The whole thing will just be an excuse for bad taste humor with Chucky raping the mother's corpse or something.

re: Curse of Chucky (dir. Mancini, Dourif returns, 2013)

I have a soft spot for the Child's Play franchise from my youth. Chucky scared me, and then I grew to really enjoy the movies. I think the first still holds up, and I enjoy the next 3 for their fun campy stuff (and the aforementioned nostalgia). I'd be all in for this.

But yea, Seed of Chucky suuucked.

If it gives Brad Dourif, who was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Wiseblood, Mississippi Burning and Deadwood a nice paycheck then....roll on.

re: Curse of Chucky (dir. Mancini, Dourif returns, 2013)

If it's anything that creeped me out at a 3 year old in the late 80s, it was Chucky. I didn't know people could hate the Child's Play franchise. They're such cheesy movies, it's hard not to like them.

Bride of Chucky was fun but I never saw Seed. I'd like another one.
