Is this legal? Local free movie theater
There is this cool local joint that screens movies free (on DVD) except for a $10/yearly membership. It makes all its $$ through concession/restaurant.
It doesn't tell you what movies it plays but it gives hints that make it obvious. all mainstream stuff.
"Why Don't You List the Titles?
The terms of our studio film licensing agreement are such that we cannot share the titles of such films we screen with the public, only privately with our members."
Here is the site:

Anyone know about the legality of such a thing? It seems like it operates on some kind of loophole, I doubt the studios would allow free screenings like this. Last week they showed godfather, clockwork orange, goonies, all big films. They also show three movies a day

It's not a movie theater screen.
And I'd imagine that they looked into rights to some capacity. Maybe they somehow have it 'approved' under some terms.

It may be even worse than that. From this article: http://www.gazettenet.com/2012/02/16...68c45fb1=gnews
Yikes.
Still, this looks interesting. If they could upgrade the equipment, it could be a fun place to get together with some friends.
"It just popped into our heads that every town needs a free movie theater," Davis said. The couple decided they could fill that hole with Popcorn Noir. "This is a place where you can take your kids, have fun, and not spend a ton of money," Davis said.
It seemed the perfect plan for Doherty, a lifelong movie fan, and Davis, a foodie.
"Tom is a big movie buff and he grew up with a dad who had about 3,000 VHS tapes that he's converted over to DVDs. I grew up around food and we decided that pairing made a lot of sense, Davis said.

Clearly they are not film people, though I doubt their members care whether the picture quality is movie theater standards. It's also clear they went through some kind of process to get licensing for a club. I've heard of things like that in cities, with movie rooms inside clubs.

This sort of thing used to be very common back in the pre-DVD era. The club thing was a way to get around paying exhibition fees. It was often the only opportunity to see psychotronic flicks, foreign genre pictures, and other obscure films. Around here, the screenings were in bars and clubs on weeknights or Sunday afternoons. You'd pay a couple of bucks to "join the club" and watch movies on a big screen tv or, if you were lucky, a battered old film print.
There's still a few groups like this around in Chicago. One rents out the Portage Theater occasionally to show old horror films and hold a mini-convention in the lobby. Unfortunately, this club shows DVD's digitally projected onto the big screen.

Popcorn Noir! I'm a member and go often. Seats about 20 people. They do screen dvd's onto a small screen, but the real attraction is the food and just enjoying times with friends. It's a mix of watching in a theater and watching in someone's living room. Actually a really nice place.
They are also super nice people! She actually just won the Great Steak Challenge on the Cooking Channel and was a contestant on Chopped. Really, the food is worth going for.
