Spartacus: War Of the Damned to be the FINAL season

DAMNIT.
He’s defeated Batiatus and Glaber, but it turns out that the end is almost here for Spartacus. Yes, the next season of the hit Starz series, which we can now reveal will be called Spartacus: War of the Damned, will be the final one, as the show comes to an end after four years, three “regular” seasons and one additional prequel season.
It’s a surprising move, given how meaningful Spartacus has been for Starz, where it is easily their biggest hit and has been crucial in getting the cable channel established as a destination for original series. I spoke to Spartacus’ executive producer and showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight, for an exclusive chat about the decision to end the series after a relatively short run, why the time was right and what we might expect when War of the Damned begins its ten episodes in January 2013.

I wish for one more season, but I am okay with this as I thought parts of last season is pretty boring (and the writing were uninspired). If they can go crazy for this last season, I will be very happy.

Spartacus was one of the main reasons why I subscribed to Starz. Going to miss it. I have enjoyed their other shows...Boss and Magic City. Plus, they have another upcoming show Da Vinci's Demons that is created by David S. Goyer.
Considering how strong season 2 ended, I think season 3 will be one hell of a ride. January 2013 is still a long way off though.

I'm not so disappointed that it is a final season, more than I am that they aren't going to give us more than 10 eps again this time.

Re: Spartacus: War Of the Damned to be the FINAL season
I just bought the first season of this on Blu last week and planned on watching it soon (Starz will be replaying the entire run 3 episodes a week starting Friday as well). But in reality 3 1/2 seasons isn't too bad. "The Tudors" and "Deadwood" lasted about the same amount of time...

I'm going to chose to believe that this really was a creative decision and not a financial one, and on that basis be happy about this. I'd rather have a 3 or 4 season show that's good for its entire run than a 7 season show that loses it's way for the last few seasons.

I also think this was a creative decision by DeKnight and company to end the show without running it into the ground and Starz complied. The show is doing really well ratings-wise and has pretty much become the flagship show for this network. I know that Starz also makes a shit load from the overseas sales of this show. Starz could have easily kept the show going for the 5-year arc that was originally planned.
DeKnight could have easily left the show after season 3 and Starz could have hired another showrunner to take over. However, I know that DeKnight has a development deal with Starz and in one of those interviews posted about the cancellation, he said he sold one of his shows to the network. I have to believe that Starz wants to keep a good working relationship with him.

Although I haven't seen most of the second season yet, from what I have seen McIntyre was a shadow of Whitfield in the charisma department. I know the show is called "Spartacus" but the supporting characters from both the premiere season and prequel were more than enough for them to shift the focus that way. Honestly, if Whitfield was still alive, I think the show would be going stronger.

It doesn't help that McIntyre looks so scrawny compared to Whitfield and the rest of the gladiators. He is in great shape compared to the majority of the Joe Schmoes on the street but compared to the rest of this cast? Sorry but no.
A little disappointed that this will be the final season. I can imagine the ending already, based on the historical Spartacus, whose body was never found. The Romans will assume that he died and proclaim that to all who will hear but we'll see him living in freedom on some little farm far away from the reach of the Republic for the remainder of his days.

I'm perfectly fine with this. I'd much rather a show be shorter and have awesome quality all the way through (with the viewer wanting more) than be dragged on longer than necessary.
