Michael Haneke's Amour Wins Cannes' Palme d'Or

The Cannes Film Festival jury has picked its winners, and as many had predicted (including Vulture), Michael Haneke won the Palme d'Or for his quietly devastating Amour. The closest thing to a consensus pick in a divisive Cannes lineup, it gives Haneke his second Palme in a row after winning for 2009’s The White Ribbon.

Other notable winners include Beyond the Hills, which won Best Screenplay and Best Actress (split amongst its two female leads), Mads Mikkelsen for Best Actor in The Hunt, and Carlos Reygadas, who won Best Director for his polarizing Post Tenebras Lux. (Many thought Leos Carax might take that prize for the equally surreal Holy Motors.) Sundance barnstormer Beasts of the Southern Wild continued to clean up, too, here winning the Camera d'Or for best first film.

I'll be seeing Amour in a few weeks, and Beasts of the Southern Wild as well. I thought the latter won Un Certain Regard but it looks like it went to Después de Lucía ("After Lucia") which sounds really intriguing:

Roberto is depressed after his wife Lucía's death at a road accident and decide to leave Puerto Vallarta and live in Mexico City. His 17-year old daughter Alejandra tries to help him, but a very difficult situation arises for her at the new school: she is a victim of bullying and hostilities by her new mates. She decides "to take her mother's place and does not say anything about her situation, so as to protect her father."

Oh, and I couldn't schedule The Angel's Share, as it meant missing either Amour or Gangs of Wasseypur.
