'Yellow Submarine' - 2012 Landmark Theater showings
Once upon a time... or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland, a place where happiness and music reigned supreme. But all that was threatened when the terrible Blue Meanies declared war and sent in their army led by a menacing Flying Glove to destroy all that was good. Enter John, Paul, George and Ringo to save the day! Armed with little more than their humor, songs, and of course, their yellow submarine, The Beatles tackle the rough seas ahead in an effort to bring down the evil forces of bluedom. The animated classic fantasy film has been digitally restored for 4k digital cinemas frame by frame, all by hand.

The Beatles: The Lost Concert
The Beatles: The Lost Concert features the group's first-ever concert in America, performed at the Washington Coliseum in Washington, D.C. Filmed in 1964 expressly for the big screen, concert footage was "lost" and remained unseen in theaters for over 47 years. More than a concert film, Lost Concert tells the story of how The Beatles first came to the U.S., through original interviews, historical footage, unpublished photos and rare artifacts. The documentary features new interviews with celebrities such as Chuck Berry, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and The Strokes, as well as reviews by journalists, historians, and fans who attended the original 1964 concert. The Beatles are the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed group in the history of popular music, having sold over 1.3 billion discs and tapes.

Our local art house will be showing it. I remember when my mom took me and my sister to see it upon the initial release. Mom had to close her eyes due to the psychedelic colors and I asked her what that funny smell was.

They ran YELLOW SUBMARINE in March in New York at the New York International Children's Film Festival. The screening was at Symphony Space, a renovated, redesigned version of the old Symphony Theater on 95th St. and Broadway, the exact theater where I saw YELLOW SUBMARINE on a double bill with WEST SIDE STORY when I was in high school some 40-odd years ago. It would have been nice to make a pilgrimage to see it again there, but I didn't. Maybe at the Ziegfeld, where I like to see big-screen movies anyway.

I remember my older sister taking me and my other sister to see it in Palos Verdes, CA. I was a young Beatles fan and the animation was so different and wonderful. At the theater they were selling a magazine with all kinds of articles and pictures from the movie. It wasn't the Official Yellow Submarine Magazine, though. It was the Teenset Yellow Submarine Special Edition. Man, wish I still had that.

I'm a massive Beatles fan and I think Yellow Submarine is practically unwatchable. I guess you have to be high to like it.

so I watched it early this afternoon, and the restoration looked utterly fantastic in DLP and the new 5.1 soundmix is also spot on - can't wait for the bluray next month!
unfortunately the Beatles: Lost Concert has been postponed:
MAY 2012 LIMITED ENGAGEMENT OF “THE BEATLES: THE LOST CONCERT” POSTPONED
New York, N.Y., May 8, 2012 — Screenvision announces the postponement of the May 17 and 22 limited engagement of “The Beatles: The Lost Concert.” The new 92-minute documentary charts the birth and impact of Beatlemania and includes, in its entirety, their first U.S. concert from February 1964 at D.C’s Washington Coliseum.
According to sources at Screenvision, the film’s distributor in the U.S., the postponement is the result of last-minute issues which are being resolved by the documentary’s producers. The distributor hopes the issues will be resolved in short order so the attraction can be rescheduled for an even longer theatrical run in late Summer 2012.
“It’s regrettable that these issues have caused the cancellation of our planned limited engagement” adds Darryl Schaffer, EVP of Exhibitor Relations, Screenvision. “We are looking forward to their resolution so we can bring ‘The Beatles: The Lost Concert’ to even more Beatles fans and theaters in the U.S.”
Anyone who purchased advance tickets can obtain a refund through Fandango, MovieTickets.com or their local exhibitor.
