It's cheap from Amazon.co.uk if you have a multi region Blu Ray player, or a PC Blu Ray drive.

Bandai Visual (JP) re-released Akira last summer. English sub and dub are included.

Amazon Japan link | YesAsia link (about $50.25)

I'm sorry to have to ask an off-topic question, but I'm actually thinking of buying a PC Blu-Ray drive for this purpose. Is watching disks from other regions a trivial process? I'd rather not have to purchase third party software or (God forbid) rip the disk to my hard drive just to do so.

If third party software is recommended, then what do you recommend?

Wouldn't it just be easier to get a cheap Insignia player that's region free? I know Best Buy has one that's $60 and just requires an older firmware to be installed.

Just curious but have you compared this one with the original American release? If so, are there any significant difference s in picture quality and fidelity?

It's VERY simple. BDRegionTray is the name of the program. You download it, run it on startup, and just right click on it to choose the region prior to loading up your preferred Blu Ray playback software. (I think it works with Power DVD and Total Media Theatre)

Funimation revealed it has acquired the home entertainment rights to Katsuhiro Otomo's film Akira. Bandai Entertainment had previously reissued the film on DVD in February of this year, and the most recent U.S. reissue before that was a Blu-ray Disc in February 2009 by Bandai Visual USA. Streamline Pictures and Geneon Entertainment released the film in the past.
We can expect a Blu-ray release!
