Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis to star in 1960's Las Vegas crime drama series
From Deadline.com
Dennis Quaid is testing the series series waters. The feature actor is in negotiations for the lead in CBS’ untitled Las Vegas period drama pilot (form. Ralph Lamb). Because of the size and the complexity of the deal, things are still moving slowly after a week of talks. Also in negotiations for the project is Michael Chiklis who is eying the pilot as part of his development/talent holding deal with CBS. The show tells the true story of Ralph Lamb, the role Quaid is in talks for – rodeo cowboy turned longtime Sheriff of Las Vegas. Former Shield star Chiklis is in negotiations to play Johnny Savino, a Chicago mobster who recently moved to Las Vegas, a ruthless killer with a polished edge. Goodfellas‘ Nicholas Pileggi co-wrote the script with Greg Walker, and James Mangold is directing. The two are executive producing with Cathy Konrad and Arthur Sarkissian.
If they manage to get Quaid and Chiklis and it being a period piece, I think this could be pretty good. I was a big fan of the series Crime Story on NBC that also took place in the 1960's.
However, the naysayers will probably say this type of show can't work on network TV, it needs to be R-rated cable or on FX.

Casino: The TV show! But without the swearing or violence I suspect.

My problem isn't so much that it's on a network, but rather that the network is CBS. CBS doesn't seem to have much patience for hour dramas that aren't procedurals. They've stuck with Good Wife, but even that show's fate has been up in the air each spring despite all the critical and awards love it gets.

If it's CBS, it will probably be another procedural...so I'm cautiously optimistic at this point, but I'm really tired of TV shows with no ongoing arcs/character development.

Chiklis will be another thug breaking the rules and Quaid as a Sheriff Cowboy seems like the cliched role for him.
If the casting was more inspired (like say George Wendt instead of Chklis) I'd be more interested.
Plus if it's going to be an ongoing story arc I'll be much less inclined to even bother watching it until a few seasons in so I'll know that it won't be cancelled and leave the story hanging.

Not too thrilled to hear this'll be on CBS. Loved Crime Story -- highly doubt this will be of the same quality.

Can we replace Quaid with Kurt Russell? Apparantly Kurt's been looking for a TV project for a while (he ALMOST got the Ted Danson role on CSI), but either no one wants him or his asking price is too high.

Probably the latter. Although not seen much these days, Russell is still probably higher on the totem pole than Quaid, and definately higher than Danson.

Update: Quaid and Chiklis have officially signed on to the Pilot.
Unless the Pilot is freaking terrible, I think the star power of this show will get it a series order. I mean the Pilot is from the writer of Goodfellas and from the director of Walk the Line.
I can see this taking the Tuesday at 10pm timeslot, currently occupied by Unforgettable.

I actually even like Ted Danson (esp if it was opposite George Wendt again ).
Plus then I'd actually be able to watch the show he's in (can't stand the corpses in the CSI type shows).
