Jason Statham will star in Heat, a remake of the 1987 Burt Reynolds film that Brian De Palms will direct from a script by the great scribe William Goldman. Goldman who wrote the original script from his novel. Statham plays the recovering gambling addict who makes his living providing protection on the rough edges of the gambling world. When a female friend is beaten by a high-rolling mobster, the enforcer kicks some ass and gets in over his head. Sierra/Affinity will sell in Berlin. When I first got this release, I thought they were remaking the Michael Mann classic Heat, which would have been a travesty. This sounds okay. Statham stars in the Taylor Hackford-directed Parker, also financed by Sierra/Affinity. Steve Chasman and Statham are producing the re-heated Heat, which shoots in France by year’s end.
For the record, this is the Heat that they are talking about:

Just looking at William Goldman's bio, he hasn't worked as a screenwriter in almost 9 years.

Re: Heat (2013? Dir: Brian DePalma, Star: Jason Statham)
I saw the original awhile back when I was watching those late 80's Burt Reynolds films where he's playing the same role as a nomad whose kicking ass and I can see the remake potential here. There were a lot of threads in that film from the hooker-friend who needs his help, to the wimp who wants to become a man, his buddy lawyer who helps run his office, and the main character's thread of being addicted to gambling and how he manages his life around it. If that film had been directed by someone capable, perhaps Robert Altman before he left due to disagreements, it would have been a much better film as opposed to it's anthology-like narrative.

Is Heat the one with Burts magic credit cards?
Be pretty cool seeing Chev fucking Chelios slashing throats with a credit card.

Brian DePalma is out as Director. They have now hired Simon West.

Big fan of Heat. It and Malone are my favorite Reynolds movies. No need to remake it, though I likely would've given it a look because of DePalma. The director change means a definite pass.

If you liked those, you have to check out Stick if you haven't; it's better than those two IMO and more badass.

I want to see Statham with a big Burt Reynolds mustache.
Burt Reynolds had some really cool movies in the 70's and 80's. Kind of like Don Johnson.
If I go back and watch them now, they might be dated. But I was a Showtime, Cinemax and cable TV movie hound in the 90's. Reynolds was everywhere back then.
You young chaps might like them.

Just curious as to which Don Johnson movies you're referring to. THE HOT SPOT was pretty good, but a very different kind of movie than Burt's were. Are you thinking of dreck like DEAD BANG and HARLEY DAVIDSON AND THE MARLBORO MAN?

This eventually did get a name change: Wild Aces. I got it from Redbox tonight. Given that it's a straight to video action movie - at least I don't remember it hitting theaters - my expectations weren't terribly high, but I really enjoyed it. It's not wall to wall action. There are a few fight scenes, though, which are done quite well. (Corey Yuen choreographed them.)
The film's got an interesting cast who do only one or two scenes: Jason Alexander, Sofia Vergara, Stanley Tucci, Anne Heche.
It's not Crank 2, but I'd say it's one of Statham's better films. It's definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of his.
