Re: Alcatraz -- "Cal Sweeney" -- 1/30/12
This one bored me to tears. Maybe I'm already getting sick of the killer of the week thing.
And by the way, Hurley is completely useless. His character truly adds nothing to the show. I like him just fine but so far it's totally obvious that he's not needed whatsoever. The writers really seem to be struggling to find things for him to do. Half of each episode (far and away the best part) are flashbacks and the rest is split up between Sam Neil being mysterious and Juggs tracking down the killer. Hurley seems completely superfluous. His insight is laughable at best. Oh and I love that a bank gets robbed and right away the super secret team gets called and as soon as Hurley hears safety deposit boxes he's like "ooh Cal Sweeney". As if nobody else in history has ever robbed a safety deposit box before.
I don't know, I'm really interested in the flashbacks and the stuff with the secret prison and the keys and all that jazz but the actual tracking down of the criminals sucks hardcore.
I absolutely love the warden. I think the actor does a great job of being mysterious and menacing at the same time. I'd actually prefer it if the show was 100% flashbacks.

This episode was really bland. What drove me nuts was I looked down at the clock at 9:55 when they were racing around in the car and went "damn, this is going to go into next week's episode." And then, nope, problem solved.

Actually thought this was a good one. There was a swerve with the young inmate, there was another key, they showed us a third key and they hinted at what the keys do but left a mystery as to what's behind the door.
Do we know if the Warden died in real time or if he was still there in '63?

I have to agree withh Whoopidoo.
This episode was quite dull. The only parts that I found entertaining were the 1960's flashbacks. Even then, Cal Sweeney was probably the most uninteresting convict of the 4 so far. It doesn't help that he was played by Eric Johnson, formerly of Smallville, who is the epitome of generic blonde white guy actor.
The ending with the Warden and the keys revelation did arouse my interest. Also, we got to see Dr. Beaurigard and Lucy in the flashbacks, so hopefully we get to learn more about their roles in the disappearances and how they ended up in modern day San Francisco. Oh well, I'm still in until the end of the season.
I do love the Warden and the Associate Warden. So far, they are the most interesting characters.

The show seems to have already run its course and there's no way it'll last long enough for them to wrap up the overarching mystery -- not that they ever would've in the first place. And when you have a morbidly obese lead don't dress him in multiple layers as he already looks huge enough.
And Satan's in that locked room or some ancient Egyptian proto-version of him at any rate. They're gathering the pieces needed to unleash him upon the world. Either that or I've been playing too much Skyrim.

How many different types of convicts are they hoping to teleport to present day? Child killers, murderers, bank robbers -- been there done that. With over 300 convicts in Alcatraz, this serial thing could get old really quick. They need to address why the baddies are here and why they feel the need to IMMEDIATELY start commiting the crimes they were arrested for when they arrive. I mean, they waste NO time with being a-holes again.

As to the show, yeah it was slow, predictable, and the flashback was the most interesting part of the show but I'm still watching until I'm not.

So it could be that others are in prison for a similar crime but he needed 2 details to figure out which prisoner it was.

When they mentioned safe deposit boxes I thought Hurley asked if anyone got hurt and if they stole any cash. Based on those 2 answers he came up with the prisoners name.

Yeah, I forgot about it so I only caught the last 20 min. and didn't feel like I missed anything, i.e. they must have spent the first 40 trying to catch that guy. Mediocre show at best.

meh, I thought this episode was all right, but still getting a bit bored by the show (bored with Episode 2 and 3).
I'm a big fan of the mystery, and not so much of the "case of the week." Of course, after the pilot, it was obvious it was going to be a "case of the week" type show, but I didn't expect a mere 2 minutes of mystery (the key analysis).
Sticking with the show for now, but I hope the mystery picks up.
