Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

It seems as if David Lynch is not interested in making films any longer. That's a shame. His tweets all seem to be about TM and his artistic output seems to be mostly music now. His last film was six years ago and I haven't heard anything about any new films in the works. And Inland Empire seemed to be shot independently so perhaps no one will finance his stuff any more?

Anyone know anything? I really enjoyed his films and I enjoyed the later ones the most: Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

He'll make more movies if he wants to; there are plenty of people who would provide his limited financing. But he's too busy with his CD (which I love) and making a film about transcendentalism, or some such nonsense that I'm not interested in.

I'm concerned he only wants to shoot digital from here on out. I didn't like how it looked for Inland Empire aesthetically. I know he's still got great films in him, since it was just over a decade ago he gave us the masterpiece that is Mulholland Dr.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

It's the "if he wants to" part that worries me.

Lynch is 66. We all thought Kubrick had a lot of great films left in him too.

Lynch's tweets seem heavily influenced by his enlightenment from TM. Makes me wonder if he would really embrace the startling violence his films were known for in the past.

Plus, he makes no mention of film at all and I can find no evidence that he's interested in the medium at all any longer.

listen to the first question answered in this trailer. i don't know if the "film" keanu is refering to is celluloid or film making in general. either way it sucks.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

In the context of the trailer, it seems he is talking about celluloid.

You thought Kubrick had a lot of great films left in him? I sure didn't. As slow as his output was, I don't think too many people would have expected many more films from him had he lived beyond Eyes Wide Shut. I know I didn't.

I love Elephant Man and The Straight Story, so I'm not worried about whether Lynch keeps startling violence in his films.

I'm sure Lynch will get back into the filmmaking spirit. He's always had a lot of interests; I'm sure those will eventually lead him back to movies. And I wouldn't worry too much about funding. He doesn't seem to have too many issues finding foreign investors.

I'm fine with a long hiatus if the best he had to offer us was Inland Empire. And go back to film, David. Digital is not for you.

With Kubrick, a lot meant 2. He was fairly young - that was my point. I think we were all waiting for AI and his nazi film.

Elephant Man had parts with some pretty grim suffering. Lynch tweets about suffering all the time.

Thats what I'm hoping. I was just wondering if anyone has heard him say anything on the topic lately. He used to make movies every two years or so. Then after Mulholland Drive, he took a long hiatus to eventually make Inland Empire and is on another even longer hiatus. Except before, we all knew he was working on Inland Empire.

Inland Empire is his third best film - and probably his most rewatchable - so it'd be a shame for him to quit now.

I enjoyed Inland Empire, but if he'd been more judicious in editing it, it might've been something really special.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

Funny, I was just thinking about this in the shower a couple of days ago, for some reason. Seems like TM has taken over his life and focus. It would be a shame to lose him as a filmmaker now, considering how much he smokes, I don't expect more than another 5 years of good health out of him.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

I love David Lynch's movies. All except Inland Empire, which I found to be a huge chore to watch with only a few short scenes that were "good." It didn't help that it was shot in SD video.

I hope he has at least one more film in him.

Re: Is David Lynch Done With Making Films?

I feel as though he got lost within 'Inland Empire'. Although it was interesting to a degree, it was muddled and tedious.

His whole TM thing is moronic and makes me afraid that if he does go back to film it will be some TM BS junk.

Why is his whole TM thing moronic? He probably feels it works for him. I know a lot of people who find TM beneficial.

I love David Lynch's music projects. The Train is a really fucking great album. Look it up on Youtube.

If someone held a gun to my head and told me that I either had to let a hobo shit in my mouth or watch Inland Empire again, I'd seriously consider letting the hobo drop a deuce.
