Green Hornet and Green Lantern get considered but Drive gets a "nice try"? WTF, QT?

I fail to see why people are so enamored with this guy's taste in film.

Last year's top 10 was better, comparatively. This one seems strange.

A lot of people like his films, and he certainly appears to have a fervent love of films and filmmaking. Therefore, as both a working filmmaker expressing his own way and a passionate, informed movie fan, his taste in film is usually very interesting. Even though it doesn't interest you, it's easy for me to see why people are curious.

Re: Quentin Tarantino's mainstream movie tastes

Hopefully when it comes time for him to make his next film he doesn't steal from any of those. Continue to rip off obscure films.

Drive was a great movie, but cannot touch most of Tarantino's movies.

Obviously I disagree.

Tarantino's films do absolutely nothing for me.

ehhh i think his opinions on modern film are greatly influenced by who his friends are. obviously he has some grudge against someone involved with DRIVE. seriously...THE THREE MUSKETEERS is his 11th favorite of the year? he must've fucked mila jovovich or he thinks she has pretty feet.

Were I looking for petty reasons for him to praise The Three Musketeers, I'd have gone with this -

- but I'm willing to bet he just dug the film.

I can see the bitching about his opinion on "Drive" has already started. *sigh* Like Tarantino (the poster) said, it was a good movie, really good...but the obsession some of you guys have about it is fascinating.

Re: Quentin Tarantino's mainstream movie tastes

It's always funny to see people complain about what Tarantino (or any reviewer, or whoever) likes. He likes some stuff that people think are crappy, just like anyone else here. And doesn't have to love all the critically acclaimed stuff either.

I agree, QTs stuff is good but very superficial/soulless. I think Refn will end up having a better career in the end. His movies force you to feel something, they are not just genre/cool exercises.IMO americas gen x auteurs have focused way too much on the superficial.

I think the Nice Try category ranks above the Considered category. Another site I visited had the list with the Nice Trys listed higher.

Agreed. I didn't see anything special about Drive at all

I like some of the films on his list that I've seen particularly Moneyball and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but there are a couple oddball choices (Green Hornet, Green Lantern). At the end of the day I guess it all comes down to opinion so whatever.

Tarantino's just jealous that people like Drive more than Death Proof

I don't think anyone is obsessing about Drive anymore than you are obsessing why people are bitching about it when they aren't.

Re: Quentin Tarantino's mainstream movie tastes

I was always sorta on the fence about QT; he did some stuff I loved... and then some stuff I sat sorta bored through. I saved this link because it really made me feel a bit embarrassed about how I had started thinking about films in general and every so often I skim it to remind myself of Tarantino's message. Now the article is written from the odd point of view of "The Hulk", and while it gets old really fast, I strongly suggest sticking with it despite the length.

http://badassdigest.com/2011/11/03/f...r-hate-a-movie

The nuggets:
QT: Never, under any circumstances, hate a movie. It won't help you and it's a waste of time.

There's plenty of reasons to not to like a movie. But if you hate them? Meaning if let them bother you? Then they'll do nothing but bother you. Who wants to be bothered? There's so many better things to do with movies.

Even the bombs, man, heck, especially the bombs man. And I mean if you want to do this for a fucking living and you're absolutely serious, then never hate a movie. You can learn so much about the craft from bad movies. I man you can't like fucking look at Kurosawa and be all [PUTS ON VOICE THAT THAT SOUNDS ODDLY LIKE PETER GRAVES FOR SOME REASON] "Oooh just do what Kurosawa did. You know, it's easy!" Fuck no! Bad movies teach you what not to do and what to correct in your process and that's way more helpful. You know how many feet of film I burned on this thing [MEANING KILL BILL] when I was trying to be like something else that was great? Like fucking Pole Fighter, like what you said? No, all the best stuff came out of me just trying to avoid mistakes.

And fuck man, hating movies closes you off to stuff that seems like whatever you hate. Or stuff by the same guy. And who knows? That other stuff could be awesome. Some of my favorite filmmakers made bad movies. It won't help you. It just won't. It stops your development right in its tracks, okay? I mean like everything and I ain't trying to get you to be like fucking me or anything. I'm just saying I think it's better for you. And it makes me way, way happier. Never hate a movie. They're gifts. Every fucking one of em.
I'm not sure I'd agree with QT on The Three Musketeers, but I'd honestly love to hear his reasons for putting it as a top 10.
