- Two weeks off as children are out of school thus providing films have legs.
- Nothing good comes out in the month of January thus providing films have legs.
- Jews, like myself, have nothing to do on Christmas day so we go see a movie and eat Chinese food instead.
If one looks at this Wednesday from last year, Little Fockers opened to $7 million with True Grit and Tron: Legacy (which opened a week prior) at $5 million. Everything else? Those films (like Yogi Bear and Voyage of the Dawn Treader) were all below $2 million.
If anything, Hollywood should pat themselves on the back for releasing less shit on Christmas weekend this year.

this is Nikki Finke crying over this.
I'm gonna guess DT will prob do around 25 or 30 for the 5 day weekend

I hope Tintin does better in the box office over the next few days... Maybe people are waiting to see it so they can go with their families for Christmas? The first day estimate suggests that it might not do all that well in the North America box office at all. That would be quite disappointing. I'm also interested to see how it does against War Horse.
All of these box office intakes seem typical for the Christmas season, but the quality of films being released is significantly better than usual. I would hope that the quality of films would help lead to better success overall for movie-going this season but these numbers don't seem to suggest that.

Bizarrely, at my theater, Tintin is playing in a smallish screen while the Chipmunks are on three screens, at least one of which has more seats than Tintin.

I'm more amazed that people seem somehow surprised that TinTin is bombing IN AMERICA (I guess I have to clarify for the few who don't get it, e.g. below.).

$150 million budget and its done less than $50 million worldwide? Yes. However, to be fair, it's only opened in three markets outside of North America (UK, France, and Turkey) up to this point.
The film has already broken even as the film has been out elsewhere in the world since October. So while it's underperforming in North America, it has already been deemed profitable.
On 2,900+ screens? No way. This may become Fincher's best preforming R-rated movie.

I don't think kids nowadays really know who Tintin is. The only reason I am familiar with Tintin is because when I was like five or six there was a Tintin animated show on HBO so it doesn't surprise me it would bomb at the BO.
To be honest besides Girl With The Dragon tattoo nothing looks THAT appealing to me at the box office. M:I looks familiar, Sherlock Holmes looks alright but seems reminiscent of Wild Wild West. I want to see Hugo but thats about it.

Very happy to see Tintin bomb. At least it appears to be bombing. Please no more Tintin in my life time.
Hope Dragon Tattoo can do at least $45 million for the 5 days. Really great movie and it deserves all the love its getting.

But I don't think unfamiliarity is any excuse for the movie not doing well. Pixar and Dreamworks put out new characters all the time and make a killing.

The only reason I'm aware of Tintin (I was born in '86) was because HBO used to run it along with Babar on Saturday mornings back in the 90s. I haven't been impressed with any of the trailers I've seen and I can't think people who are even younger than me (who this film is geared towards) would flock to it.

Dreamworks on the other hand has a formula that works for them Big name celebrity (Will Ferrell, Will Smith, Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy) + Talking Animal or Alien = BO Gold.
Thats basically it. It's not foolproof though Bee Movie and Antz didn't do that well. Although personally I thought Antz was one of the best. Kids flock to that shit.

Grew up in Australia reading Tintin and Asterix. All the school libraries have it, and all the kids read it. Guess it's just not an American thing.

I actually think this Christmas season has the most films I've wanted to see in a long time. There's still a backlog of 4-5 films I need to get to, and this is after seeing half a dozen in the last week.

I still don't get why Tintin being an unknown property in America is a hinderance. Did people say the same for Raiders when that came out? Or Avatar? Or any other movie that they didn't know the background for? I don't know if it's a marketing thing, but it seems like a strange argument.
