Re: The Adventures of Tintin (D: Spielberg, 2011): The Reviews Thread

I had a chance to see Tin Tin at a Hero Complex IMAX screening in Burbank a week ago, and had a blast! I didn't really know anything about Tin Tin, besides knowing it was huge in Europe. The only reason I was excited to see it to be honest was seeing Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish as co-writers. The film is visually fantastic. The animators and creators of the film had the good foresight to turn down the realism of the mocap style, and I wasn't creeped out as I usually am.

When it comes to the story of the Tin Tin, and the action, it was really top notch. I felt like a 10 year old just enjoying action that wasn't cruel, but exciting and fun. I'm happy to see that they have a sequel planned already. I'm gonna go back and catch it this coming Friday. Great great stuff!

It's very entertaining, if a little haphazard in it's pacing. By the end I enjoyed it, but kept thinking why didn't Spielberg plot-out Indy 4 similar to what he did here?

Re: The Adventures of Tintin (D: Spielberg, 2011): The Reviews Thread

I'm a longtime fan of the books, and there were parts I loved, parts I didn't.

-Opening credits are a joy to watch
-Inside jokes and details showed that the creators had a passion for the material--just seeing the no. 26 outside of Tintin's flat made me smile.
-The look of the some of the main characters is still off (Tintin a little creepy, Snowy's fur not quite right, the Thompsons too rotund), but the secondary characters were spot-on. Perhaps because they're stylized while Tintin is relatively realistic, they were easier to animate.
-Plot was a little confusing to follow where they had spliced and changed the books, but I thought it worked overall. Don't know what I would have thought had I not read them.
-Really did feel like playing Uncharted at times
-Looked great and I'd like to see it in IMAX
-Too long. Could have shaved 10 minutes easily.

I'm a little mixed on how to vote in my own poll. I'm kind of in the "liked+" category but will definitely see it again.

Outstanding entertainment. Made me feel like a kid again. Loved the action, loved the dog, loved captain Haddock and even Tintin was a good character to root for. Hopefully word of mouth will spread and North American audiences will embrace this.

Saw it today. Thought it was a lot of fun, and successfully captured the Tintin spirit. The three big action set pieces were phenomenal, and the resolution of the pickpocket subplot was hilarious.

It's a shame this appears to be bombing, as I'd love to see more installments.

I think it's doing well enough overseas that we'll be seeing a sequel

IDK, The Golden Compass did great business overseas ($302m) but bombed in the U.S. (only $70m) and no signs of the sequel to that...

I think the thing that will get us a sequel is if Jackson and Speilberg really push for it. They have enough combined clout to do it.

And i dont think anyone involved in that had the big participation back-end that Spielberg and Jackson have in this.

Is the 3D worth the extra money?

In this case I would say no, I don't think it added much.

Yeah, Kirkman was probably thinking about Rin Tin Tin too.

I agree that it wasn't spectacular, but then I rarely think 3-D is worth the extra $. What I'm hoping will make an impact is seeing it in IMAX. Will try to do that this weekend or next week.

I've been looking forward to this all year. I liked it but it does need a trim. Too long. Some of the action scenes were amazing. Hope there's a sequel.

The only movie that needed to be seen in 3D this year was Hugo.

Re: The Adventures of Tintin (D: Spielberg, 2011): The Reviews Thread

Saw it today. Much better than I expected....it was a bit darker and more "realistic" than I anticipated. The setpieces were endlessly inventive, no one can do this stuff like Spielberg can.

All in all, pretty wonderful film. This one will have staying power I think (and I'm not necessarily talking about box office when I say that).

I saw this last night and thought it was really good. It looked amazing. It was slightly boring in some parts but it definitely ended with me wanting to see more. I loved the little nods towards the books too and was surprised I picked out quite a few even though I haven't read the books since I was 10 or 11 years old.

Re: The Adventures of Tintin (D: Spielberg, 2011): The Reviews Thread

I had hedged my expectations based on some of the lukewarm reviews, but it turned out this film was truly excellent. It really felt like a Tintin adventure come-to-life, while still presenting cutting edge animation and film techniques. I was in a full audience, with many kids, and it got a very enthusiastic reaction.

I'm a huge Tintin fan, but this was a mess. Action scene one after another after another, and with some really pointless expository dialogue scenes - something felt lacking - very disappointed. I had to explain to my 8-year old niece what sober meant

I can't vote because I'm neither a fan nor don't know much about Tintin. There isn't a middle-ground.

Anyway, I enjoyed it
