That was incredibly depressing. Especially for a holiday episode.

Good story episode, but yes it was needlessly depressing.

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Symphony of Illumination" -- 12/05/11

Yeah, a really depressing episode, but also really touching…I think this show, while not the comedy it used to be, has been knocking it out of the park (for me) these last couple seasons…or maybe it has just been hitting really close to home for me…

The episode with the phone call from Marshall’s dad was amazing for me. My dad didnt die all that recently, it has been about 2 years, but it isn’t something that I think about very often and not something that I have ever been especially sad over. But that episode hit me like a fucking bat. I actually cried when he got his message and I have NEVER done that before while watching a TV show…I’ve been moved, gotten chills, been terrified, or so anxious that I couldn’t sit still or was nauseas, but I have never cried.

…and the whole storyline with Marshall and Lily trying to get pregnant without success played out while my wife and I were trying to conceive, which seemed like forever, with no success.

Then last season’s finale sat on my DVR for about a month, and I ended up watching it literally a day after my wife discovered she was pregnant. Then we tried to hide it for about a month, but people suspected her not drinking or riding roller coasters…

Then, again, the episode with the gender sat on my DVR for a couple weeks, and I watched it 2 nights after we found out the sex of our baby and had long discussions about whether to tell people (we have not).

Now, while Robin not being able to pole vault has no immediate corollary in my life, I can relate because of our troubles and how we felt during that time…and the troubles some of our friends are having now.

This show has had a really weird transformation over the last few years, and maybe it isn’t always as funny as it used to be, it is occasionally as funny as it used to be and occasionally just flat out good…to me at least.

I'm glad they stuck to their guns with the Robin character. She's never been a motherly type, and didn't want kids. I was worried that she would make a sudden and unlikely transformation just because someone's else baby said goo goo. She wasn't crying the loss of a baby, she was crying about losing the choice.

Indeed it was!! Didn't quite get why they had to do that now!

Good stuff with Robin - depressing and all that it was. Though I didn't care for the reveal that Robin's kids were made up -- poor attempt at shocking us, imo.

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Symphony of Illumination" -- 12/05/11

Watching the episode last night it really hit me that these characters have been on the air for seven years now. Which is why I think it's fantastic that the writers/producers are starting to mix drama into the comedy - and allowing the characters to grow up from the twentysomethings they were in the beginning.

With that sad last night was almost unnecessarily sad. I really like the cold opening and thought it would be a great device for the show as it continues but the more the episode the went onwards it just seemed weird and not something Robin would do. But still I was tearing up in the final moments...

I really liked the episode, and I usually don't care much about episodes centered around Robin. I thought the reveal that the kids weren't real was a bit clumsy (should have had them just fade without the voiceover), but otherwise it was excellent.

Depressing, but still good, however, the episode didn't need that. No need to jerk the audience around.

Yeah I thought that was a bit cheap

"Here's Robin's kids that she has with Barney ... ... ... just kidding, it's actually the opposite of that"

Heh. The kid playing Robin's "son" was Noah Schnacky, a theatre kid from Orlando that my daughter has done shows with. Good for him, too bad he didn't have any lines.

How! did you only watch the beginning?

I hated this ep. The cheat with the fake kids and especially the super depressing end.
Hated it.

Went home and rewatched the last 10 minutes. I apparently must have dozed off between when Lilly finds Marshall on the roof and when Robin gets home to the crazy x-mas lights. I'm such an old man.

And "adult" Ted STILL has his kids stuck on the couch listening to him prattle on? Shouldn't they have graduated from college by now and young 20-somethings themselves?!?! MEET THE F-ING MOTHER ALREADY!

Dagnabbit!

So we STILL don't know who Barney's marrying from the season premiere.

I was sure they slipped when she referred to Barney as "your dad", but once again, they're a step ahead of us.

Well, I don't think it's taken future Ted 7 years to tell his kids the story. But I do think it would be funny if when they get to the final episode that they bring back the actors to film one more scene showing that they actually have aged that much.

Re: How I Met Your Mother -- "Symphony of Illumination" -- 12/05/11

I just liked the end with the AC/DC song.
What is it with AC/DC and Christmas? While we're at it, how is everyone suddenly getting permission for the original recordings? First the WalMart commercials, now they're on a Christmas episode of HIMYM. Yet The Daily Show has to use a sound-alike of "Back In Black" for the Lewis Black segment.
