I look for the sale to possibly go live online at B&N.com Monday afternoon. Should start the next day at stores.

Maybe now I can afford to upgrade my unwatched blind buys from previous sales to Blu... don't judge me.

Went there last night and had them put 10 or so BDs in a stack under their counter for Tuesday.

Too bad the blu rays of
12 Angry Men
Design For Living
and
The Lady Vanishes

are all being released after the sale. There is always the next sale.

I didn't pick anything up in the last two Criterion Sales, so I'm looking to remedy that this time around

Lots of stuff has come out that I want since then.

Tempted on ISLAND OF THE LOST SOULS, but am not crazy about the lame extras. May just rent that one and get my fill of it or go SD. I buy very few Criterions so tend to be a bit fussy about the whole package relative to the price, even at half off.

How are they lame? You get a commentary with horror expert Gregory Mank, 63 minutes of interviews, and a Devo short. Sounds pretty good to me.

I'm trying to resist buying it before the sale to break it open during the Horror Challenge.

EDIT: Decided I was being too much of a Scrooge even though that wasn't my intention. I hope everyone who wants ISLAND OF THE LOST SOULS can get a great deal on it and love it. It's such a mesmerizing movie and is supposed to be a great transfer, so in the end that's what counts, not extras.

Tell me about it, these are the most "un-lame" set of extras I've been looking forward to in some time (and I think it's great they got Richard Stanley as an interviewee).

In fact, I considered them so "un-lame" I already bought the DVD from DVD Empire (~$20.50 after the 15% coupon & the order got free shipping. Where I live the sales tax is 9.9% so without a coupon the $15 price ends up $16.50 from B&N. Call me crazy, lock me in a straightjacket, but I was eager enough to get this that I chose not to save $4 & buy it immediately from a better retailer!)

Sorry, the "lame" thing threw me off my axis a bit. Of all possible DVD/BD releases I can't conceive the mentality behind why Lost Souls has "lame" special features, especially compared to Criterion's other $30 MSRP DVDs. Ever since the features were announced I thought "these features seem both generous & interesting." Criterion's come a long way from Alphaville-era bonuses.

I know you de-Scrooged in a followup post, but I must ask: what made you consider the features lame to begin with? This concept is inconceivable to me! I'm not being facetious, I really must know! What features would there have to be for you to consider "cool"? (I stress, I'm merely trying to understand a diametrically opposed viewpoint. "See how the other half lives", to quote from Land of the Dead.)

Re: B&N 50% Criterion Sale starting Tuesday, Nov. 1st...

I'm also going to get hit with Sales Tax if I buy from B&N, & per their website all the stores near me are sold out; so I'll have to buy at least 1 more item to get the free ship.

Which leads me to............

I have a vague memory that DD also does 50% Criterion sales in November? Does anyone know if that's correct & if so are the new owners continuing the tradition?

Re: B&N 50% Criterion Sale starting Tuesday, Nov. 1st...

I wish Criterion hadn't the rights to a lot of the Bunuel stuff; it would be amazing to get those on BluRay. Hopefully they'll push out a Viriadiana or Exterminating Angel high definition soon. It is a shame for Criterion to lose the film rights to properties that just end up unreleased altogether (like Milky Way or Obscure Object of My Desire).
