The Sing Off 2011 Season
Didn't see a thread for this, so I thought I'd create one. Ratings appear to be low this season, but I still enjoy it.
Anyone else watching it?
Ben Folds is still the best judge in my opinion.

Re: The Sing Off 2011 Season
Unfortunately, its a good show stuck in a "death slot". I caught last week's episode via "On Demand", and this week Oxygen ran it after prime time Tuesday and a few other times this week. They may let this cycle run its course, since its the least expensive option and NBC can't compete on Monday nights.
Yeah, Ben Folds is one of my favorite judges on any of these comps, since he he's "technical", yet warm. The show is probably the best of any of the Music comps in terms of presenting a consistent level of quality performances.

I've been watching the day after on my iPad (thanks NBC iPad app).
I still like the show, and the groups this season look like a lot of fun.
I don't miss Nicole at all, Sara is doing a great job.

I still haven't watched a single episode. I have them all, though, for later viewing. This needs to be a summer show when there's less competition.

Agreed. Afro Blue just doesn't do anything for me. Urban Method started the season strong, but I think the female leads just don't have good enough voices. With the Dartmouth Aires, I like the one lead singer, but don't see them being viable recording artists.

Pentatonix had it from day 1. They are consistently at the top of the pack as far as performances, and I'm not sure the judges have ever had a bad thing to say about them.
I watch shows like this and wonder how the glorified karaoke that is American Idol gets all the attention. These people are incredible musicians. It's the vocal equivalent of So You Think You Can Dance vs. Dancing with the Stars...one is based on pure talent and the other is just a popularity contest.

I liked it the first season and actually turned it on tonight for some reason. But it got on my nerves pretty quickly and I moved on to something else.
I think I am suffering from Singing Show fatigue and I never was a huge fan of American Idol.

I don't think tonight has been particularly good. I mostly just like it when they do fun stuff though, so I'm a little bias. I hope Dartmouth can pull it out, but it's going to be hard for Pentatonix to lose.

Good god Pentatonix is amazing. Everyone stepped up tonight in a big way, but they are unreal.
Though I'm not a huge fan of Afro-Blue (their songs all sound the same to me) I thought they deserved a shot over the Aires, who are just a good college guys group. You could throw a rock and hit a good college guys group. But they are entertaining to watch and their lead singer is pretty great, so I guess it's ok.
I used to sing in a jazz choir that did a lot of songs like Afro-Blue. Fun to sing, not so fun for me to listen to. I put in my votes for Pentatonix tonight.

I liked AB tonight. I would have liked them to stay over Urban Method. In general I don't think the college groups belong at the end, but think Michael of Dartmouth is a much better "star" than Scott.

Yeah Michael of Dartmouth Aires is great. Still voted for Pentatonix though. I can't believe the three singers are only 19.

Hell ya - Pentatonix takes it. Much deserved.
I also have a major crush on their female singer.

Okay, I'm not the only one. I had a discussion with the wife how I thought Kirstie was kinda cute. The wife thought she was ugly and asked why she always sings out of the side of her mouth.
Anyway, very glad Pentatonix won. They truly deserve it. You should check out the 3 of them singing other songs on youtube when they were in high school. Pretty good stuff.

I think Kirstie may have had a cleft palate. If you looked closely, she has that hairline scar on her upper lip, where everyone I know who had a cleft palate has one. And I have to say I think she's very cute as well. Maybe your wife is jealous?
Great job to Pentatonix, definitely the best group of the season. Several groups had nights with really strong performances but I think Pentatonix was the most consistent. That said... I don't think I enjoyed anyone this year as much as I enjoyed Street Corner Symphony from last year. I think they should have won. FWIW, I noticed last night that they released their first album in October. Listening now and it's excellent! On their website they said they will be on the Christmas special next week.

Re: The Sing Off 2011 Season
I might be the only person who cares, but The Sing Off is coming back this winter. New Judge is Jewel:
http://www.nbc.com/sing-off/
"America's favorite a cappella show is back! Just in time for the holidays, "The Sing-Off" returns as the country's top a cappella groups head to Hollywood for the singing competition with a sound all its own. Four-time Grammy Award nominee Jewel is joining "The Sing-Off" as a new judge, along with Shawn Stockman and Ben Folds, with host Nick Lachey ("The Winner Is") also set to come back.
Each group will perform show-stopping numbers like you've never seen or heard before, with no lip-synching, backup bands or safety net. They'll be covering all your favorites from today's top pop chart, to R&B, rock, country and more. It's "hit the right notes or go home" in this competition, as the celebrity judges critique the performers and eliminate one group each week. The last group standing will be awarded a cash prize and an Epic Records/Sony Music recording contract. Now that's something to sing about! One-hour alternative series."

That's good news. This was the only singing show I could stand. Looking forward to the new season.
