Nightmare on Elm Street: downmixes and cuts

Just a quick question regarding the release of the first film. I've heard some controversy surrounding the various releases, particularly involving a 5.1 downmix on the so-called "Infinifilm" edition, masquerading as the original mono track. Did the original track ever hit DVD, or did it disappear after the VHS releases dropped out of print? I guess, shame upon New Line, the same downmix appeared on their BR release. In addition, there was apparently a very brief cut to some of the violence to obtain an R-rating, though I'm not entirely certain the so-called "uncut" version ever got an official release. A quick Google search has turned up some conflicting reports, just curious what the whole story was.
