Long Live The King at the box office 9/23-9/25
Box Office: 'Lion King' Pacing to Beat 'Moneyball,' Reclaim Throne
Saturday update:
So much for early Friday box office projections: Updated data shows Disney's "The Lion King," in weekend No. 2 of a 3D re-release, pulling away from the pack and on pace to gross around $24 million for the weekend.
That same raw box office data had Sony's Brad Pitt baseball film, "Moneyball," winning the box office with around $23 million this weekend. Better developed estimates now have the film grossing around $19 million.
Also hitting its pre-release estimate: Warner/Alcon family film "Dolphin Tale" is pacing at around $18 million, according to Saturday morning estimates.
Two other wide releases this weekend, Lionsgate Taylor Lautner vehicle "Abduction" and Open Road Jason Statham/Clive Owen slaughter-fest "Killer Elite," are slated to both miss their pre-release low-teens marks -- in fact, both films are on pace to narrowly miss the $10 million barrier.

I think Moneyball will have good legs. WOM has been strong. Hell, even I want to see it and I don't like baseball.

I think that Killer Elite needs much more credit for stinking up the box office than Abduction does. It has three supposedly big stars and cost apparently twice as much as Aduction. $70 million. What were they thinking?

Wow. I can't believe Simba and company are going to win the box office 2 weeks in a row. That's amazing. Even if it doesn't get extended, it'll still probably end up inside the top 40 movies for 2011. Absolutely crazy but I love it.
Oops. My estimates were off. I was thinking it was at like $50 million buts it's already over $60 million. It's currently ranked 35 for the year and, assuming it gets an extension, will most likely be inside the top 30 for year. It's already brought in more than numerous high profile movies that were released this year.

It's really the perfect Disney movie to release at the right time. Out of the big four(Mermaid, B&tB, tLK, Aladdin) it's their biggest movie, as it appealed to boys & girls, and those kids now have children of their own. Not to mention the flood of mediocre CG crap this year(including Disney's own Cars 2) might have factored in.

Not to mention the flood of mediocre CG crap this year(including Disney's own Cars 2) might have factored in.

Apes has reached $402 million worldwide, and I think it has yet to open in Japan, Italy, or China. $450 mil should be easy to get.
