Working conditions at an Amazon warehouse in PA

No wonder why I get my packages from Amazon so fast!

Don't know if all Amazon warehouses are run like this one, but a 9 page article on the working conditions is kinda surprising...

Unless they're making a bigger deal out of this than it really is in an attempt to sensationalize it (like the media loves to do these days), I thought there were government regulations in place to protect the American worker from what they allege in that article. -kd5-

Worked in a lot of warehouses in my life and it is mostly the same everywhere I worked. People want the low prices of a Walmart or Amazon, but to get those prices low you can't have union workers and you have to not really put the workers first.

I'm afraid to even read the article. As a young kid, I worked in a warehouse and it was a horrible experience.

Warehouse work is more demanding, physically and mentally, than people imagine. Most of the temps from the article don't sound like they knew what they were getting into.

I worked in a warehouse for one week. I don't think I've ever been in better shape than after that week.

Re: Working conditions at an Amazon warehouse in PA

Amazon initiated voluntary time off, allowing employees to go home if they wished and ice cream was available.

[...]

"They do have ice pops going around and water everywhere," the guard reported

[...]

They said they received extra break time when it was hot

[...]

Warehouse workers said Amazon and ISS both emphasized safety measures and passed out fruit and water on hot summer days when the warehouse got warm.
Sounds great!

OMG! No Facebook at work? No texting? Having to process orders all day? How does one do that?

This certainly explains why so many of Amazon packages are poorly packed and end up getting damaged in the mail.

Is this worse than any other warehouse job? Let's be honest, some jobs are just shittier than others.

Exactly. Quit crying. It is not worse than the warehouse here at my work. Get a different job if you can't handle it.

Re: Working conditions at an Amazon warehouse in PA

They all said that the heat problem was remedied at all named warehouses in the area better except at amazon. If Amazon had handled that better and not worried about theft to the nth degree instead, then this wouldn't have hit the media so hard.
The other issue is obvious. Amazon is one of the richest companies in the world and easily had the resources to remedy this.

Wouldn't this be more appropriate, posted in the "Hot Deals" forum?

That's not funny.

Back on topic, I just read the whole article, and agree that some jobs do suck. But some employers also suck more than others. While reading, I couldn't help thinking about slave labor building the Pyramids in ancient Egypt. At least the Amazon employees have the option of leaving, by choice or otherwise. When pundits talk about American workers increasing their productivity, this is likely what they mean. I am all for productivity, but turning workers into virtual slaves is not something to be proud of, and Amazon (and many other employers who use the same tactics, whether it be in a warehouse or a call center) should be ashamed. Thanks to the OP for the link.

I don't think it hit anything hard. Nobody I know has heard anything about this and the only place I've ever seen it brought up was here and even I didn't read the article. Hot warehouses? Shocking! At least from the quotes I've read, the workers are getting stuff from the company to combat the heat. That never happened at any of the warehouses I worked and I've worked in ones out in the middle of jungles. You know what we got one day? A hat. If you wanted water, you brought your own.

Yeah, I don't think Amazon is exactly hurting because of this expose. I did go through the trouble to read the entire article when this thread first popped up, and I still have been ordering from Amazon and expecting my packages to be delivered in 2 days like my Prime membership promises.

Re: Working conditions at an Amazon warehouse in PA

Bloomberg magazine mentioned it in their interview with Bezos in this week's magazine and said he only wanted to discuss the Fire. On Aol the story was posted on Huffington Post and multitudes of comments were posted. there were people who said they would no longer shop there. On a PR front, no one wants to be seen in a negative light.

If the Internet "Comments" section is to be believed, nobody will be buying an Apple 4S either. Tough times, tough times.

I don't know why all the Fortune 500 companies bother to pay millions of dollars for corporate public relations. They should all just let it hang out like this. Let everyone know their dirtiest laundry. It would make reading the newspaper more fun.
