The Lion King 3-D back in theaters 9/16/11 two weeks only!
Surprised no thread has been started on this. Anyone here planning on seeing this? I'll most likely go as my mother is a huge fan but i really wish this was released as a 2-d option as well as the 3-d. Is this playing on any IMAX? I recall it being released a few years back on IMAX and missed out.

I saw this last month at Disney's D23 convention in Anaheim. It was great to see it up on a big screen again. The 3D was very well done and the movie lent itself well to the conversion. That being said, if I were to see it again, I'd be just fine with 2D. It's a great movie that doesn't need any gimmicks to sell it.

My local theatres are offering this in 3D and 2D. We'll probably catch it, since I have never seen The Lion King.

I saw the Lion King 7 times theatrically during it's initial run. I was in high school at the time and three-four of those time I went with different dates. Crazy to think I'm taking my two girls to see it now.

Somehow I have a feeling after seeing the box office returns for the first couple of weeks that it will magically get and extended run.

saw it this morning on the ETX screen over at Tysons - the image looked a little bit soft and the bass not as good as I remember seeing (hearing) it in the theaters - when Scar hits the mouse in the beginning it's supposed to be a loud bassy thwack, and considering the bass on past films on the ETX system have been astounding, the mix really didn't impress me as I had hoped it to(even in 7.1). The 3D effects were okay but didn't really add much to the 'experience' - since the film's music, story and voice acting really carry the film. Oh and the 'Morning Report' musical number is not in this version.

just checked my listings, most of my theaters are also showing it in 2D, which is great, and an excuse to see it again on the big screen and not pay the extra 4 bucks for the shitty 3D conversion

Looks like my local theaters are also showing a 2D option for The Lion King. Less show times for that one though compared to the 3D.
I want to see the 3D version, but those glasses really bother my eyes.

- Presented on one screen; with one or two showtimes in 2D and the rest in 3D. The 2D showtimes are the first showtimes of the morning/afternoon.
- Two screens; one dedicated to 2D and the other to 3D.
- One screen; 3D only.

Saw it at midnight last night, and I loved it. It was a great show and there was a great audience. There were a few kids but they were really well-behaved and they lent themselves to some funny comments (when Scar accuses Simba of killing Mufasa at the end, this little boy went "NO HE DIDN'T YOU KILLED MUFASA YOU JERK!", and the entire audience burst out laughing). It was really intense seeing in theaters, it really loses a lot of the emotional impact at home.

yet as I understand it now - Disney is no longer striking 35mm prints - all theaters that are showing this are in digital projection (2D and 3D) - which is a plus since minus the glasses for the 2D presentations - image, color and brightness should be consistent.

Just wanted to add that I watched "Waking Up Sleeping Beauty" tonight and cannot recommend it enough. If you're someone like me who grew up on the late 80's - mid 90's Disney animated movies then it is a must see film.

it's just 'Waking Sleeping Beauty' - funny how this title came up a lot this week here and the "Why doesn't Disney make animated films like they used to?" thread, but yes, I highly recommend the movie as well.

Oops, yes you are correct. I think it's great timing for the doc because it's about their animation department peaking with The Lion King. I also liked it because I felt that it treated all the major players pretty fairly, even though some of them were pretty brutal. It reminded a lot of The Social Network.

Took the kiddos today and out of the two dozen people there I manage to get someone behind me who wants to sing along and recite lines. is wrong with people?
Still very entertaining.

Are you 100% sure on that. A know-it-all on our HD forum went to a pre-release screening about a month ago and he repeatedly assured me that all the changes done for IMAX and DVD had been reversed. I should have known he didn't know what he was talking about.
