"Kill Bill" 1 & 2 Question

I picked up a version of "Kill Bill" 1 & 2 off ebay the other day and just received it. Both volumes came in the exclusive Best Buy cardboard case that fits both cases but the cover art for both is different. The seller could not remember where the set originated from. Volume 1 came with a second disc that is DVD-9 disc. The artwork on the back covers is not your typical art but appears to me as just a Japanese symbol. Anybody have an idea where this set may have come from?

This is what the seller had in his description:

"Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2 on DVD complete with inserts and Volume 1 has a second disc that is a region free copy of Kill Bill Volume 1 Uncut (really cool!). They also include exclusive box set art that you won't find anywhere else. I don't remember where I bought this but I've scoured the internet trying to find the same art for this set and can't. It also comes with a rare box-set box that holds both movies. This is an extremely cool collector's set and the only reason I'm selling is because I've upgraded to Blu ray. Serious bidders only, this is a one-of-a-kind set".

If the uncut version of Vol. 1 is Region Free, it's a bootleg.

Hmmm... I'm going to try and watch it back-to-back to see the difference.

But what about the artwork???

One-of-a-kind and he can't remember where he got it?? So if it's an official release & not a bootleg Mirimax made only 1 copy of that set, sold it somewhere, included a region free uncut version of the movie that hasn't been released in the US yet, and then never made any other sets?

Something doesn't sound right about that but I can't put my finger on what it could be. Anyone else have any thoughts?

The US black and white part is in color.

He took a legit release, put Vol. 1 in a new case that holds two discs and put a bootleg Japanese version with it as a second disc. It also looks like he changed the case on Vol. 2 so it would match as well. In addition, you have the custom artwork that he got from somewhere online.

It looks fine but if you paid a premium to get this one of a kind release, you got ripped off.

Re: "Kill Bill" 1 & 2 Question

The Japanese version has more gore and the "House of Blue Leaves" segment has more over-the-top action moves (e.g. Uma's character does some nice acrobatics) and, as Mister Peepers pointed out, that sequence is all in color in the Japanese cut, none of it converting to b&w. So, in my opinion, the Japanese cut is a huge improvement. If that's what you got, you should count your blessings.
