They hate each other, but they need each other
What musical pairs have a need/hate relationship? Not love/hate, need/hate. They don't like each other much, but the two together make magic. Apart, they suck. I'm thinking:
Gilmour/Waters
Axl/Slash
Plant/Page
Jagger/Richards
Lennon/McCartney
Who else?

Good topic but I can't really think of any that haven't been listed other than Liam and Noel Gallagher. I don't really like Oasis that much but they seemed better together to me.
Another that seems to be somewhat true after the last album they've released (although I guess they don't hate each other) is the Red Hot Chili Peppers and John Frusciante. Both times he's left the band they just seem weaker and most of their output before he came around wasn't exactly great either (with exception to The Uplift Mofo Party Plan).
Not exactly sure if I agree with Lennon and McCartney, I think they had their little spats but I don't know if they necessarily continued to hate each other. I know after The Beatles broke up initially there were some hard feelings but I thought they had somewhat reconciled shortly before Lennon died.

I think I read somewhere that Vince Neil, has a love/hate relationship with Motley Crue from his book.

Joey and Johnny Ramone.

I don't think there's any animosity there, it seems like John Frusciante just flakes on them every few years.

That's why I put "although I guess they don't hate each other" in parentheses. I didn't really think about it until after I posted that he left on good terms.

Lennon/McCartney certainly made a lot of excellent music (and a lot of crap) after The Beatles.
I love Keith Richards' solo albums.
Joey Ramone's solo album was better than anything The Ramones did in the previous 20 years.

Corgan/Iha and D'arcy
I don't care how much Corgan claims the others didn't contribute anything to the albums, you can't get around the fact that Zwan and Smashing Pumpkins 2.0 suck.

Townshend/Daltrey can't stand the sight of each other. But they never really lost track of why they need each other in the first place.
