Paradise Lost HBO docs (about the West Memphis 3)

Given that there is still interest in the case (especially with the 3 getting released from prison on friday), thought i'd let everyone know that for those with HBO, that they're being re aired next monday and tuesday at 5:30pm

And here's the "trailer" for the first one
<object width="480" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXobZPf97FA?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXobZPf97FA?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="390" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Great documentaries, and with the third one screening soon, it would be great if they actually caught the killer(s).

I am watching the first one right now. I'd started it maybe 10 years ago and never got around to finishing the film.

So, does that mean it's been 10 years since they aired, or close to it? I remember watching and thinking the kids were not guilty and I remember the guy they thought really did it pretty clearly, but I have no sense for just how long it's been since I saw it.

Sweet, I was looking for these on Netflix Watch Instantly the other day and was sad to see they weren't there.

Nice. I'm sure these movies will get a bigger audience with all the recent news about this case. Great movies.

Didn't know about a third. Looking forward to that!

No, someone lent it to me and I never finished it. I just finished the first film.

It seems pretty apparent to me that the boys are innocent. It feels too much like these kids stick out in their community so they must have done it, but the evidence is pretty thin. Strength wise, I don't think they could have done it and when you see their maturity, they seem equally incapable of committing the crimes.

I feel truly sorry for the parents loss, but it seems like they NEED someone to blame and they have faith in the societal order and if the police say that these are the killers, then they must be.

The most damning thing against the boys or one of the boys is the Damien interview over the end credits, but again, it feels very much like a boy's lack of maturity and not fully grasping the weight and ramifications of his words.

I have watched about 5 minutes of Revelations. I'm interested to see what further developments transpire.

I finished Revelations and Damien's maturation is very noticeable. I found this the more compelling of the 2 films, but the groundwork of the first film is part of that.

It really feels like Byers has to be responsible. The incredible factual inaccuracies added to the fact that he seems very disingenuous and appears to be play acting whenever he's on screen. He had the strength, knowledge and trust of the boys and the possibility of motive.

One thing becomes even more brutally apparent, these kids were absolutely innocent.

Fair warning to anyone who hasn't seen these. The docs show some very gruesome and disturbing images of the mutilated bodies.

It's also interesting that the docs really make you suspect Byers, one of the fathers of the victims. Byers showed up at the release and declared that the WM3 were wrongly convicted and innocent.

I was just wondering to myself whether part 3 aired tonight or tomorrow night. Thanks for the reminder.

I just finished the 3rd film. It seems that Byers must not of done it. I still think he came across as a possibility as time wore on, but that seems to have given way to the current state of things.

The 3 are free, but justice was not done, not in the least. Did Hobbs do it? It's possible, but who knows. What we do know is that 3 innocent men are finally free.

BIG OLD BUMP

I borrowed the trilogy from my library. I’ve never seen these films, but I’ve been aware of them forever.

The first thing that immediately surprised me is the utterly frank display of the bodies at the crime scene. I’ve never seen a crime documentary be so explicit. I suspected that perhaps some blurring or pixelation had been removed amidst remastering these for dvd. But it sounds like they originally aired that way. Kind of excessive.

Re: Paradise Lost HBO docs (about the West Memphis 3)

I suspect it's an HBO thing, feeling the need to push the envelope. I remember another documentary they showed around the same era, where the opening scene was footage of one prisoner murdering another. It was a several minute long shot of the guy being stabbed in the head what must have been twenty or thirty times (the guards all had to suit up before they would go into the prisoner area to break it up which is why it went on so long). I'll never forget the way that the knife went in so deep, that when he pulled it out for the next stab, the guy's head would lift off the ground, stuck to the blade.

^Troy Kell. What a piece of garbage. I haven't seen the HBO film, Gladiator Days, but I have seen the murder video. I was also surprised by the relative explicitness of the Paradise Lost crime-scene footage. Not terribly graphic, but with children one expects extra discretion.

Re: Paradise Lost HBO docs (about the West Memphis 3)

I watched the first two films. I didn’t really care for this. The Byers guy is entirely an act. Like HBO found this wacko and just couldn’t help themselves. “Let’s take home out to the crime scene and film his eccentric behavior.” “Let’s take him to the grave site and see what he does.” He’s like the village idiot and they give him all this screen time. But it all pretty clearly is an act.
